These volunteers are clearing out hidden landmines in Yemen

Until October 2, a tenuous truce kept the peace between Iran-backed rebels, the Houthis, and pro-government forces backed by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia. But civilians were still being killed in Yemen. The reason? Landmines hidden in roads, farmland and everyday objects, left there by the Houthis since 2017. Now, volunteers are risking their lives to clear these mines.

We spoke to Fares Alhemyari, director of the Yemeni Landmine Observatory, which coordinates a network of volunteers who identify and report these mines.
