Several Arab-language and Iranian websites have published a photo showing Juliette Binoche and Marion Cotillard side by side, claiming that they took part in a Yellow Vests demonstration held on December 8 in Paris. The date and location are correct, but the context is wrong: the two Oscar-winning French stars did not march with Yellow Vests.
The same photo was published by multiple outlets. On the left, Juliette Binoche, and on the right Marion Cotillard, wearing a blue baseball cap. The photo has zoomed in on the two actresses, so the surroundings cannot be identified.
According to the Arabic version of MSN, the two stars have joined the Yellow Vests movement. A version of this story is also found on the Egyptian website 3Ain (which boasts 2 million subscribers on Facebook), on the Gulf news site Gulf 365 and on another Egyptian site, Al Mesryoon. Iranian websites have also posted the photo with the same story, one of them Khabar Online, which has 234,000 subscribers on the private messaging service Telegram.
So what was the real context of the photo? By entering the name of the two actresses in Google Images and adding the term “Paris” you find many French articles showing that they did indeed take part, along with other celebrities, in a demonstration on December 8 in Paris, but it was the March for the Climate, which took place at the same time as the fourth round of protests by the Yellow Vests. The photo was also posted by Juliette Binoche on her official Instagram profile, where she explains she took part in the March for the Climate.
It should be noted that a number of people protesting with the Yellow Vests also joined the March for the Climate to lend their support.
