Pig’s head found near Australian university’s Muslim prayer room


Tunisian graduate student Majdi Faleh got a nasty surprise on Sunday when he went to the toilets adjacent to the University of Western Australia’s Muslim prayer room.

In the Turkish-style toilets, he found a pig’s severed head.

He took several pictures, which he posted to Facebook with the following message: “Needless to say, if this happened at a university, then THINGS ARE ESCALATING.”

The university’s student guild quickly reacted: “[We] strongly condemn this deeply damaging and offensive incident, which is absolutely unacceptable. Acts like this are designed only to incite religious and racial hatred.” The university authorities also condemned this act, and said they had reported it to the police.

Online, many UWA students expressed surprise that this could happen on their campus, with some noting that it was not necessarily the act of a student since many other people walk through the campus, which is located in the city of Perth.

The climate for Muslims in Australia has become tense as of late, with repeated protests throughout the country by the anti-Islam campaign “Reclaim Australia”, which have intensified since the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris.

Because practising Muslims do not eat pork, pigs have frequently been used in anti-Muslim attacks in numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and the United States.
