Japan’s Sakurajima volcano erupted on Sunday, sending up the highest plume of smoke in recorded history. The ash spewed an impressive five kilometres into the air, and covered the entire city of Kagoshima – located 10 kilometres from the volcano.

To shield themselves from the ash, residents used surgical masks and umbrellas –or better yet, stayed indoors. The video below shows drivers turning  on their headlights in the middle of the day.

Cleanup crews were dousing the city streets to get rid of the ash on Monday morning, according to CBS News. No injuries were reported, in what is the volcano’s 500th explosion in just a year.
