A Seattle police officer has been caught on camera punching a woman in the face during an attempted arrest.

The officer is reported to have stopped a group of people for allegedly jaywalking (recklessly crossing a road). When he attempted to restrain one of the women, another member of the group - said to be 17 - tried to intervene. The officer then punched her.

The incident is being investigated by the Seattle police Office of Professional Accountability. It has also sparked allegations of racism and calls for a new police chief in the city. Only a month ago, an officer was caught on tape assaulting and racially insulting a robbery suspect (who later turned out to be innocent).
