CCTV footage has revealed that a homeless man in New York who was stabbed after coming to a woman's rescue was left to die on the pavement while passers-by stared at him, one of them even taking a photo on his mobile phone before walking away.

The 31-year-old from Guatemala bled to death after being stabbed repeatedly by a man who was in the process of attacking a woman in Queens, New York City, on Sunday 18 April at 5:40am. The police say 25 people walked past Alfredo Tale-Yax before one of them called the emergency services.

An extract of the video released by New York Police Department and obtained by the New York Post.

At 00'05 seconds the woman and her attacker disappear from view. It is at this point, when she allegedly screamed, that Tale-Yax came to her rescue and was stabbed. At 00'06 the attacker runs back in the opposite direction, followed by Tale-Yax, who collapses on the floor. The men who appear at 00'24 are said to be seen taking a photo. It is only at 00'45 on the video - an hour and 20 minutes after Tale-Yax was stabbed - that somebody tries to shake him awake and calls the emergency services. By the time they arrived he was dead.

Family members said that Yale-Tax had recently lost his job and his home.
