He's the next big thing in Kenya, he's got 35,000 friends on Facebook, and he's the only name worth mentioning on Twitter. Meet Makmende, the man capable of giving malaria to mosquitoes and counting to 577 with his toes.

Makmende appeared in a video clip for the Kenyan group "Just A Band", posted on YouTube just a few weeks ago. Since then, he's become the most talked about thing on the Kenyan Web. Something of an African Shaft, the finely-dressed character has provoked a wave of hilarious comments on the Web; nearly as impressive/ ridiculous as Chuck Norris mania...

A few examples:

The clip that started everything

The clip was presented as the trailer to the film "Makmende the Movie". If Just a Band thought it would get them a bit of attention, they made a massive miscalculation. The musicians have even been asked by local Nation Media Group to turn the story into a television series.

The name Makmende comes from the classic line, "Make my day", threatened by Clint Eastwood in Inspector Harry. Beyond the jokes, Makmende has proved that, as blogger Ethan Zuckerman points out, the Kenyan Web has developed enormously in the past few years.
