The Web is ablaze over France's controversial qualification for the World Cup, or to be precise, Thierry Henry's handball, which shattered Ireland's chances of taking part in the 2010 tournament.

Facebook and YouTube have been bombarded with cries of injustice from Irish users (most of them in the most humorous of manners, as is the Irish way). Twitter too, where the tag #thierryhenry has proved a huge hit, even attracting French fans looking to apologise for the striker's blatant misdemeanour.

“FIFA obviously prefers to have former world champions playing in South Africa”

Desmond Gilhooly, 35, is from Dublin.

People here don't really believe that FIFA will agree to a rematch. We're just a small fish in the pond. FIFA obviously prefers to have former world champions playing in South Africa.

It's only a game; I don't think there's any anti-French sentiment in general. But it's true that Henry isn't going to be welcome here for some time. What happened clearly shows that we should use video referees. Henry himself admits to having made a mistake, and he even told an Irish player that he did it on purpose.

Obviously everyone's talking about it here. My wife just sent me a very funny email. It says that the Dublin Gaelic football team [Gaelic football is played with the hands], which is incidentally called "The Blues", has found a new talent. He's described as ‘an expert handler of the ball under pressure'..."
