This squirrel is an Internet superstar. He was recently seen having a cuddle on Vladimir Putin's knee, sitting on a golf course with Tiger Woods, and even stepping on the moon.

It all started when a couple took a hike in Banff National Park, Canada. Melissa Brandt and her husband wanted to take a photo in front of Lake Minnewanka. They put their camera on timer and got into position. But just as the shutter went up, a squirrel appeared in the shot.

The result (above) was rather amusing. So the hiking couple decided to send it to a competition organised by the National Geographic magazine. In doing so, they launched the career of the now famous Canadian rodent.

Web users have become somewhat obsessed with Photoshopping the squirrel into unlikely scenarios. There's even a Twitter application that places the squirrel in your Twitter profile image. You can also join the Facebook group "The squirrel that gatecrashed that holiday photo appreciation society".

If you would like to put the squirrel in an unlikely scenario yourself, do pass your version on to us.

It really is everywhere
