The WASP knife is more lethal than any other. As you can see in the video, which was published by its manufacturers, the WASP knife injects a frozen ball of compressed gas into the body, which, once released, swells to the size of a basketball. The UK's West Midlands Metropolitan Police has already received instructions to prevent the circulation of the knife. A difficult task, seeing as it can be bought online. If anything, the announcement of these measures has probably fuelled the weapon's popularity even more.
"The people carrying them [knives] are younger and younger"
Ann founded a website that aids knife-crime victims (Knifecrimes.org) after her 27-year-old son was fatally stabbed at a cash point in 2005.
I wouldn't say it's worse in the UK, it's just that we've recognised the problem here, and moved away from concentrating on guns. In the nine years before last March, 2,026 people were fatally stabbed, while there were 601 fatal gun incidents, which speaks for itself. The knife problem is something that's been happening for decades, it's just that now, the people carrying them are younger and younger. We target year seven children [11-12-yrs] because that's the age when they have a lot to deal with and become tempted to carry something in the foolish belief that it will protect them. What's very sad is that with many incidents, including fatalities, the person has been stabbed with their own knife.
The wasp knife is pretty horrendous looking. But like I always say - any knife is lethal if it comes into contact with a main artery. We take them for granted because they're so domesticated, but historically, they were invented for hunting. This form of knife just adds another level their dangerousness in general. The problem is, once something like this is brought to attention through the media, you will see people trying to get hold of one. I've no doubt that in the next week we will find people carrying them."
