McCain, Obama, and their equally offensive pastors

While Barack Obama was in danger of being pushed out of the democratic race for the support of "anti-America" pastor Jeremiah Wright, John McCain seems to have escaped scrutiny from the endorsement of a pastor who calls the Catholic Church the "great whore" and the New Orleans catastrophe as god’s punishment for homosexuals.

While Barack Obama was in danger of being forced out of the democratic race for supporting his "anti-America" pastor Jeremiah Wright, John McCain seems to have escaped scrutiny even though he endorses a pastor who refers to the Catholic Church as the "great whore" and the New Orleans catastrophe as God’s punishment for homosexuals.

Pastor John Hagee of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, chose McCain over Republican candidate Mike Huckabee and declared his endorsement on stage with McCain on February 27. Questions have been raised about statements made by Hagee such as "what happened in New Orleans looked like the curse of God", linking the event with a "homosexual parade there on the Monday that Katrina came". But the biggest criticism has come from members of the Catholic community, who said he has compared the church’s methods with those of Hitler. Despite criticism, McCain accepted the endorsement and said that Hagee “supports what I stand for and believe in”. But when questioned about this later, he replied that "It’s simply not accurate to say that because someone endorses me that I therefore embrace their views".

Hagee’s response to the accusations

After being told off by McCain on 24 April, Hagee shot back at his critics on May 4, saying "Anyone who knows anything about me...knows how utterly false this accusation is...I am not now, nor have ever been, anti-Catholic. [...] I will continue to preach an uncompromising gospel and continue to speak out when I feel that my love for America and the state of Israel and the Jewish people deserve it; even when it is not politically correct."

Despite saying Hagee's original comments "were nonsense", McCain denounced Barack Obama on his stance concerning his own pastor. "I stand behind Pastor John Hagee, Obama should stand behind Jeremiah Wright," he said, refusing to reject the pastor's endorsement.

The Catholic church, "great whore"

Hagee explains how a "great whore" riding a beast represents the Roman Church. The "whore" is drinking the blood of the Jews from a cup. He says this "false religious system is going to be devoured by the antichrist".
