The British public was wowed by Carla Sarkozy's elegance and beauty yesterday when she met the Queen. And they didn't miss out on the chance to compare the French president's wife with that of Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles, who rarely enjoys any praise. We listen to the view of a British "appearance management" consultant on each woman's choice of style.

"Carla was very French chic. The duchess of Cornwall had a pheasant on her head"

I found Carla Bruni-Sarkozy's style very "French chic", which means both modest and elegant. On the whole the English press had the same opinion, particularly the Daily Mail, which is a popular read here. Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker-Bowles paled in comparison. Not just because she's older and was never a model, but because she adopted a style that does not suit her. The plumed hat was very extravagant and romantic, while she is really quite conservative. The Daily Mail even said that it looked like a pheasant crash-landed on her head. Elton John could get away with this kind of extravagance, because he's known for his creative character. But it was a mistake for Camilla. Carla knew to stay modest. I think she was advised by Dior stylist John Galliano. I've noticed that since she became first lady she's calmed down her wardrobe.

I would have suggested that she put her hair up, especially with that kind of hat. And I would have put her in something more suited to her figure, as that grey coat weighs her down a bit. And the last negative point; I think she should have put on some more elegant shoes than those she arrived at the airport in. She wore flat shoes, some suggested not to seem too tall in front of the queen. Honestly, I think the queen is quite above that. It was probably not to make her husband look so small.

Many people compared her with Jackie Kennedy, mainly because of the pillbox hat - the trademark of the American first lady. But although Carla Bruni can hold herself well, because of her modelling years, she doesn't have the ‘at ease' look that Kennedy did. That's normal of course, because she's not used to this type of state visit. As for the Kennedy couple, it's hard to compare them with the Sarkozy couple. John and Jackie were both very charming. Nicolas Sarkozy might be an improvement on his predecessor [Jacques Chirac] and make a better impression abroad, but he does not have the charm of John Kennedy."
