The proliferation of camera cell phones has seen an increasing number of amateur videos emerging from Iraq. The favourite genre appears to be humour, which is spurring the production of hundreds of videos that would match ‘Pop Idol' standards. With hours to spare and nothing to do between often dangerous missions, US soldiers are choreographing, performing, and recording themselves dancing and singing, and then posting the videos on YouTube. We put together a collection of these videos, although dates and locations are unknown, and showed them to ex-soldiers and US Army officials to get their reactions. Post your questions on their profile pages.
Ice Ice Baby, remix version
Parody of a soft R&B video.
The title of this piece is meant as a joke, but it proves itself true in the second half. Like others, it's a compilation of dance routines. But two thirds of the way through, images of Iraqi prisoners are cut into the film. The apparent lack of differentiation is very disturbing.
US Maj. Winfield Danielson says that blogs are not banned, but actually encouraged in the army. The Iraq division has its own YouTube account which claims to give ‘boots to the ground' reporting. Only disturbing/offensive material is edited out of videos. There aren't any ‘humorous' films on the site though. Link to site.
We follow a ‘security at the source' policy, which
means that we let soldiers know the guidelines, and if they don't follow them,
then the correct action is taken. Otherwise, they can do what they like.
There are good things about these videos. They can act as stress relievers for the soldiers, and anything that lightens the mood is a good thing. Also, they show the human side of the army to people around the world. Soldiers showing a human side can also help us to get information from local people. But these positive aspects are faced with challenges too. You have to remember that anyone wearing a uniform is a representative of the army.
We have not banned blogging. We actually encourage blogs, websites, videos, etc. They help us tell our story. We only restrict blogs that are culturally insensitive, or that endorse a political party or inappropriate behaviour."

You can see in this video that the kids are having fun and are not afraid of the soldiers. It’s ‘playtime’. As far as the local adults frowning on the activities, it depends on what side the adult is on- pro or anti USA. In general I believe it helps local relations. I do know that no matter what culture you’re from, when it comes to kids, they normally put a smile on your face.”7 December 2007
This video shows the fine line soldiers play between intimidating and having fun with locals. Ernesto says that humour doesn't always work, but it gets around most cultural differences.
I found the videos pretty funny. This is not something
new. Soldiers always put on a show. You'll always have the old guys who find it
ridiculous and demeaning, and say, ‘when I was in the army we didn't have time
for that.' But they had alcohol! We don't!
However difficult a culture is, you always get around it with humour. We'd play tricks on each other. We'd give the Iraqis chewing tobacco and watch them turn all shades of green. They'd put salt in our tea. If everyone's willing to laugh at themselves, it makes everything easier. Stop trying to be so damn mysterious! Sometimes it doesn't go to plan though. Once, we were up to our necks in gum. So we decided to go and throw it at the local kids. We didn't realise how competitive they'd get. They were really fighting over the gum. It didn't go down well.
About putting stuff online, what the army don't like about this new wave of technology: there's no way to censor it. If it gets online it's not going anywhere. There's no secret ninja squad waiting to get rid of it. But I can understand why they want to censor comments. Our lives are made worse by people who tell lies.
Time without leave increased from 12 months to 15, so you're out there for a long time. You have to find something to do to stop you from going stir crazy. Each of these videos probably took around two weeks to make in total! If the army tried to censor videos there'd a huge backlash."
These videos are just getting more and more popular. But they're not safe. The
army doesn't want low ranking staff to be the ones who decide what goes online.
A few months ago they released a new policy on blogs. They're not outlawed, but
they must be vetted through the chain of command. It's not pure censorship- it's
a case of ‘everyone has free speech but you're not allowed to shout fire in a
crowded theatre'. You can get people killed. Things have really been tightened
up in the past two years.
I think these videos are completely harmless. Personally, I don't publish mine because they could fall into the wrong hands. People think it's only death and sadness in those places- that's not how it is. You have to joke to get by. We did have a lot of fun over there. There was also a lot of sadness.
Regarding the locals, if people in the Iraq and Afghanistan area see us having fun they might think ‘those damn Americans killed my uncle and now they're celebrating. I'm going to get a gun and join the militia. But if they've met you, then they might think ‘I like'em, they're fun'. The videos don't have the power to sway someone. But they can reinforce ideas."

Soldier Videos
Soumis par Cait (non vérifié) le lun, 25/08/2008 - 02:55.Well, I happen to like the videos. As for the prisoners, well I have better photos of insurgents here in my possession. You see my husband was in Iraq in 2004 and in 2006. Personally it wouldn't bother me if the prisoners were tortured, especially after they killed my main man. So if the soldiers have videos online, good for them...keep making them. OH, and thanks for the laugh. It felt good.

LIke Life...
Soumis par Annie Keys (non vérifié) le lun, 18/08/2008 - 04:38.Like most things in life there are good things and bad, good aspects and bad. With this medium we have instant access to the realities of war. Things that used to be brought back with the soldiers and relayed in story form. A new medium that allows almost instant access to the story in film form. Neither was 100% accurate and as with any film or story we see what the film maker / story teller wants us to see so it all has to be considered as such. Do these things happen? Yes. So some make us laugh, cry angry etc? yes. Is a lot of it real life for our men and women. Absolutely. It is what it is, watch it, learn and respond in a reasonable way.

showtime_iraq_harmless_
Soumis par Unregistered user (non vérifié) le mar, 29/07/2008 - 19:11.I think it's great to see that our troops are normal. It's when we loose the ability to LOL I worry. I would worry if they walked around thinking they were cold bastards that didn't have feelings.
Reguardless of what they do you will find the critics. I say when you get a chance to have some fun, go for it. Just be careful and don't let your fun get in the way of where you are. In other words have fun but cover your butts.
As far as the POW's in the one clip,I see nothing wrong. It's not like they are hurting them.
Great job guys, get home soon and safe,

Interesting format to the
Soumis par Ashur (non vérifié) le mer, 26/12/2007 - 21:28.Interesting format to the article... I've never seen one with embedded videos like this, which captures the attention of the reader. But as far as the format of the article goes I cannot pull from it a consistent arguement. There seems to be different ideas from each video, but no arguement to tie all together, so I'm not sure of the author's thoughts on soldier blogging in general.
As far as my thoughts, I think these types of blogs, showing happy kids, and interaction of soldiers with civilians are for propaganda purposes, to counter the images of attrocities and illegal activity from the soldiers. What I think is funny however, is that these probably posatively motivated videos for propaganda, show a sort of twisted humor. I'm not sure if its because of the cultural differences, between what Americans think is funny (such as singing naked in the shower) and what Eastern cultures think is funny, or perhaps if we are looking at the early results of war-trauma syndrome, and the sort of twisted humor which is the product of being in an environment of moral degredation and chaos, much at their own creation. In general, what I see, is two very differen't cultures, and the mixing of these two cultures. The introduction of western cultures to Eastern people... and especially Westerners in the position of a soldier where civilians will most likely play along, out of fear and general social balance of power. I think in the west, the video of the soldiers making the Iraqi men dance to "boom boom boom boom, I want you IN MY ROOM" would be seen as humorous. But they overlook the lyrics in such a song, and how that is in conflict with traditional Eastern values, simply because Western cultures are prone to putting ANYTHING in their lyrics, and it not really creating a stir. From an Eastern perspective, we probably see these videos and think, What can these soldiers offer the East in terms of becomming civilized?
To comment more, I would need a consistent arguement by the author, so I'll know what to agree or disagree with, but initially this is my response, that what we are viewing in such videos, is an American attempt to give off the image of FRIENDS of the Iraqi civilians, and not FOES as attrocity videos have proven, which is why the army encourages it. However, in the attempt to make such propaganda, the U.S. Army's lack of cultural awarness, and perhaps also psychological difficencies in the troops cause a stir in the public, which is why, as the article has asserted, blogs have become increasingly censored by the hierarchy of the military. I'm sure there are far better examples of videos with questionable humor as well... the ABU GHRAIB pictures, esentially, were apparently an expression of US Humor... because I think we all remember quite vividly the smiles on the faces of the soldiers as they were positioning nude Iraqi men. So it is clear that humor goes wrong... but i'm not sure if tis because in general westerners are utterly lacking morals due to exposure to such immorality in their own media and socialization as children, or if its because we are looking at a psychological condition in these soldiers which has stripped them of their very humanity.

Neutral
Soumis par Team Observers le mer, 26/12/2007 - 21:42.Thanks for this interesting comment. Where are you from? You're asking what's the author's position on these videos. As you see, this web site only publishes content produced by amateurs (here, soldiers), not professional journalists. We only edit and translate it. So we don't have an "opinion" on the content we produce. We try adopt a neutral perspective. It's of course difficult to remain totally neutral. Even if we don't write the articles, we select the pieces we publish. And I guess one coud argue that this selection can indicate our position. But we really try to remain as neutral as possible. And we try to publish each time different point of view on one issue. Here, we have comments from US soldiers. But we welcome comments from Iraqi people, whether they like or dislike this kind of video.

you guys are retarded
Soumis par james shortway (non vérifié) le lun, 04/08/2008 - 02:08.I don't know how you can say you are being neutral. I am a soldier and after reading your captions I felt guilty! I don't know if this is a full time job for you or if you have a "real" job however, The average work week in Iraq is about 90 hours. Sometimes more sometimes a bit less. However when I am not getting blown up by the enemy (three times) or being shot at, i find it a great relief to do funny things with my comrades. You are correct though I don't have to think to shoot an enemy or p.u.c(personal under control) a captive because it is what I was taught,Because it is us or them, and I will not go fail America. Whether they shake my hand or spit in my face I am the guardian of freedom and the American way of life. it is the way it needs to be. I love that you are so concerned with the rights and feelings of people who are attempting to kill the 44,000 fighting men who actually defend America. So my recommendation to you is get over your self. If you want to comment on what I do with my spare time, i strongly urge you to go fight a war pick up a gun! I am so disgusted by liberal morons who will be the downfall of America. Guess what when you guys stick your nose in what we do it takes away more rights of our already limited time. Everyone fails to realize that while you are at home in your warm bed there are men, fighting men, infantrymen like myself going up to two weeks without sleep, to defend the rights of people who are going to cry about the war, or how we spend our time off. Enjoy your warm bed, it is a sad state of affairs when the people who have no idea what's going on decide that they know better than I about how to fight a war. Your time is better spent, and far less damaging reporting about a cat stuck in a tree. My only assumption is that if you were a lawyer you would be the slip and fall ambulance chasers! good for you! pedal your propaganda you are awesome.
