Yahoo bought the photo sharing network Flickr in 2005. Now, Yahoo faces takeover from Microsoft, meaning that Flickr would also fall into the hands of the corporate giant. But the photo-sharers are not happy about the move and have created a group called ‘Microsoft: Keep your evil grubby hands off our Flickr' to prove it. Since its creation last month the group has already accumulated 3,615 members and 314 pictures dedicated to the cause.
The reason I put this picture on the
group is because I thought I could bring up something people hate about
Microsoft: the blue Windows crashing screen, and mix it with something we all
know and love from Yahoo: Flickr and its [pink and blue] colours. The group
might be a creation of overexcitement though, as you can see with some
pointless pictures.
It's not so much about Flickr users being scared of Microsoft taking over Flickr but against Microsoft taking over Yahoo. With Microsoft taking over Yahoo, web-users will be left with a choice of only Google or Microsoft. Microsoft has a very bad image for some users, possibly because of the unstable Windows operating-system or the lack of innovation in some domains (like the Internet Explorer browser). This kind of scares Yahoo fans."
I will quit Flickr if the MS
purchase of Yahoo goes through. I will miss the wonderful people and talented
photographers I've virtually met on Flickr. I think that the Yahoo! culture is vastly different
than the Microsoft culture. I hope Yahoo! looks for partners elsewhere."

Yahoo running Flickr has
had negative impacts ... nothing extreme yet, but losing my Flickr user ID I'd
say it's pretty large and being forced to create a Yahoo! account is
significant. Microsoft will kill Flickr ....That means I have less than a year to
find a suitable replacement and hope they have an easy way to migrate my photos
off Flickr and into the new system.(...)
Flickr's personality is one that can't be beaten. (...) It will be a sad day if the Yahoo! properties we've all come to know and love fall under the control of Microsoft that seems to destroy everything they touch."
