Two million people got together in Bogota on Monday to voice the same message: ‘say no to the Farc'. Our Observer, who attended the event, says that it will renew the ‘collective memory' of the country.

The demonstration on Monday will stay in the collective memory of the country as the biggest assembly of people of recent history. Launched by web-users (Jorge Guevara and Cristina Parra) on Facebook (here), the movement managed to reunite five million Colombians (two million according to officials) in more than 40 cities around the country. Many Colombians who live abroad- as far as Paris and Tokyo, also marched. I've just got back from events in Bogota and I must say that the numbers were quite impressive. Everyone was equipped with a white tee-shirt (me included!) with ‘Colombia soy yo' (I am Colombia) written on it. Everywhere you looked there were inventive slogans against the Farc, terrorism, taking hostages, Chavez and Piedad Cordoba; and in favour of liberty, peace, humanitarian accord and President Uribe. There were some varied banners, but as a whole the overall message was against the Farc and their taking of hostages. The protest can be seen as a mark of support for President Uribe, but it must be noticed that it was not overly politically marked. Only the left-wing Polo Democratico party, who was strengthened in the October elections, had vested in Plaza Bolivar in the centre to display its boycotting of the demonstration (which they perceived as pro-Uribe) and insist on humanitarian accord."
