A campaign about the Beijing Olympics produced for Amnesty International
France was considered so aggressive by its creators that they decided to call
off its release.

Advertising agency TBWA\Paris did however seek permission from their
client to present the project at the Cannes Lions advertising festival. And it
even received a prize. Since then the images, which show Chinese prisoners
tortured with the help of Olympics sports equipment, have been circulated on
blogs and forums in China,
causing outrage in the country.<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

inaugurated as Russia's

Evguenia Obitchkina, an international relations lecturer in Moscow,
explains that the conflict between Russia and the West might have more
to do with the hydrocarbon trade than human rights.

A Chinese protester campaigns in front of Carrefour in Beijing

Chinese web-users angered by disruptions during the Olympic torch's tour
through Paris
last week are organising a campaign to boycott Carrefour starting May 1st, according to Reuters. Our Observer in China
has sent us images of a mini-protest in front of a Carrefour store in Beijing. The police
intervened in the affair, but only by asking the protesters to move on.

UPDATE (18
APRIL 08 10am): Protests against Carrefour have sprung up all over China and the demonstrators
have extended their crusade to several other French companies including Luis
Vuitton, Sephora and Dior. See new pictures at the bottom of the post.
The Child Coal Hauler

Since blogger
Xu Alun released this documentary on February 10, it's had over half a million
hits. It tells the story of three homeless orphans working as coal-haulers in a
southern city of China.
According to our Observer in Hong Kong, a specialist in social problems in China, this is
just one example of millions of "left-behind children" in the country.

Odd looking photographer? Must be a terrorist

The London Metropolitan police have just issued new measures in the fight against terrorism. During a five week campaign police officers are expected to stop and search more “odd” looking people and the public are being warned to report anything “suspicious”. But after just two weeks since its launch the public are starting to question whether it’s infringing on civil liberties. Photographers in particular are sick of being questioned by policemen and being told to move on. To voice their complaints, artists are creating their own versions of the campaign’s posters.
