Young 'Experts' versus old 'Crazies'

handball-obs.jpg

Without a doubt, the old generation who called themselves the "crazies" marked the history of French handball forever. They were the first-ever French handball team to win an Olympic medal in Barcelona, and then became world vice-champion in 1993 and world champion in 1995, but finished fourth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Jackson Richardson, Philippe Gardent and other Fédérick Volle managed by Daniel Constantini, lifted France among handball’s creme de la creme.

In Beijing, success’ continuity is in the hands of a new generation who call themselves the 'experts'. They are a talented group with exceptional character, eager to honour their role models, but also ready to surpass their achievements.

"There is a massive difference of talent"

Philippe Gardent, an origianal "crazy of the 1992 Barcelona Games, now coach of the French team Chambéry Savoie Handball, knows the youngsters are simply better than his former team.

I don't want to contrast these two generations; I think they complete each other and have given the team a brilliant continuity.

It's obvious. There is a massive difference of talent between the two generations. The ‘experts’ are clearly better than we were in 1992. They beat Russia in quarter-finals while we lost to them in 1992 -but today's Russia is not yesterday’s USSR [France lost against former USSR 23-22].

The ‘experts’ are more talented than when we were in the Olympics and their physical preparation is very impressive. The context is different though. In 1992 we came out of nowhere, but they have been all in the spotlight for some time as real professionals.

Since the start of the games everyone can see they deserve the gold, but we remain cautious. We want to avoid the wrong confidence that always haunts us at this level of competition.”

"They share the craze for the game"

Rodolphe Azadian, a former player on the second-division team ASM Chaville, is convinced that the "experts" are technically better and share the same craze for the game, as did the "crazies".

The difference between the talent of the “experts” and the "crazies" is as plain as day. The “experts” are really more gifted, but they share the craze for the game. As was the case with the “crazies”, they take a lot of risks. They appear to be free, to be strong. That was the case with Olivier Girault, who did fabulous things for the team when it was really necessary.

“During the France – Russia game, Daniel Narcisse was great. He was really above the competition and is now one of the three best left-back players of the tournament. Luc Abalo was sensational at right wing; his game level is on par with Spain's Albert Rocas. Nikola Karabatic remains quiet but did his job. The Gilles brothers, Daouda Karaboué and Thierry Omeyer, did a good job too.

“During the game the team appeared to be serene, as was the coach Claude Onesta, who remains quiet on his bench. We expected them to play like they did during the France – Poland game (30-30) but they calmly took the advantage thanks to real master strokes.”
