The long battle between double-amputee Oscar Pistorius and the International Olympic Committee was finally won by the South African athlete. He had his chance but failed to qualify at the Track and Field Golden Gala meeting in Rome despite popular support for his cause.

But the Paralympics were nevertheless represented by a young and talented Polish table tennis player called Natalia Partyka.

"She prefers attention coming after a victory"

Marcin Smietana, our Polish Observer, presents Natalia Partyka, a tennis table athlete ready to shine at the Beijing Olympics as well as the Paralympics.

Poland’s Natalia Partyka is a two-time Paralympic table tennis champion and junior national champion. She will participate in the Paralympics in September, so it may come as a surprise for some to see her at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Her presence in Beijing has already caught the attention of the international media, but she tends to shy away from press and TV reporters. She prefers attention coming after a victory, she says, rather for the simple reason of who she is.

Watching her playing is actually very impressive, and she clearly deserves her place in the Olympics. She confirmed her status in her match against Hong Kong's Tie Yana, a prominent player in this competition, when she held out to the fifth game. In Thursday’s team event against Germany, Partyka won precious points for Poland, and the match score was 3-1 for the national team.
