“Papa, what’s the Shah’s job?”

Stamps dating 1975.

The Shah of Iran, or Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, was Iran's last monarch. He ruled the country from 1941 until the Islamic Revolution in 1979. This opinion piece on the "king of kings" and his legacy was sent to us by one of our registered users, Shohreh A., 42, from Tehran.

This is Shohreh's personal opinion and has not been edited by FRANCE 24 journalists. If you'd like to give your own view on the Shah, then please either leave a comment or sign up as an Observer and send us a tip.

When I was a child I used to ask my father what job the Shah did. And each time he would reply: ‘He's a Shah'. Since I didn't understand what he meant I asked: ‘I mean where does he go to work from five in the morning till the afternoon, like you?!" And again I got the same answer. And I thought to myself, ‘why does papa knows so many things but not this?!'

A few years later, when I was 11 years old, the black revolution of 1979 occurred as a result of the so-called Guadeloupe Conference plot. Since the Shah had always wanted to be the only decision-maker, the whole country was standing on his shoulders; so when he left, it collapsed very easily. Since then, we Iranian people have been going through tragedy after tragedy. Many people have been - and are still being - tortured and killed by the religious regime.

The Shah had made Iran the ‘gendarme of the region'. He controlled the price of oil and refused to engage in war with our neighbours. That's why the Guadeloupe Conference took place [a discussion by Western powers in Guadeloupe in January 1979, which many see as the moment when the West decided to withdraw its support for the Shah]. Despite his good work, according to the memories of his men, the Shah ignored the working classes and the disadvantaged of Iran and didn't want their living and economic conditions to improve, because he thought that if they became financially stable, then they would turn into his enemies! But he was absolutely wrong, and ignoring the people led to losing their support. He didn't realise that the people's support could have guaranteed his stay in power.

Years after 1979 I began to learn more about the Shah and my country. I found out that he couldn't stand crises and he would leave the country or the capital to avoid them. As he did in 1953 and eventually in 1979. Before leaving Iran for good, he had put some of his long-serving men in jail in the hope that by sacrificing them people would turn to him. He left Iran without releasing them - though he didn't forget to take his pet dogs with him. The Shah left those individuals and turned the whole country over to Khomeini. And Khomeini executed many, many people, including those officials who had been imprisoned by the Shah.

Now his son lives on the other side of the world...always hidden behind the walls of his palace, only surfacing when Iranians take to the streets, to say ‘Hey, I'm there for you!' Yes, people take to the streets, chant, risk their lives, get thrown into jail, but still resist. All this is for freedom, not because of you, Mr Reza Pahlavi. And what did you do for the freedom of Iran?! You met one of Khomeini's grandsons and had a nice conversation with him. After the revolution, when many political refugees were sentenced to be extradited from Turkey to Iran for execution, your financial aid could have saved them. But you closed your eyes and ears. And just recently, when Jundallah [militants] killed a group of Revolutionary Guards in Baluchestan, you sent your condolences to their families. And strangely enough, around eight years ago, your mother-in-law came to Iran to visit relatives without any difficulty! How was that possible? You know the answer and so do we...

As my father never gave me a proper answer about what the Shah did I tried to find out for myself. By piecing things together, I realised that he wasn't a responsible Shah, especially when he left Iran for good. Because of that, many of us blame him for all the misery Khomeini brought about. We blame him for all the dark moments, for the years which were spent in fear and deep sorrow, for all the lives that were lost, for all and all. Each time one of us is executed it's like part of our soul goes with them. And it's not easy to explain how we feel. This is something you will never understand Mr Pahlavi! And I'm quite sure that you don't even want to try.

The book of monarchy has been closed and the only person who closed it was your father. What was his job? He was a Shah..."

a brief answer

Shah rubbed Iranians of theire resources and became one of the richest men of his time. this was his job ms. shohreh, which he did from 5 am till evening...
what this family have done for iran's freedom? We have not seen anything.
But we have seen them in many concerts.

Besides you can find other photos. like ms. Farah Diba Pahlavi with the most famous actor Alain Delon, kissing her hands.......
That's what they have done for iran's freedom.
This is the job that shah did . his being irresponsible ,fleeing iran and handing the country over to the religius regime ruined iran completly.

hope you got the answer for ur question.

I Feel sorry for you

With all your apparent good faith …You are an ignorant. It is an old saying that the curiosity kills the cat…But, in your case…Ignorance will kill you.

Many like you prefer to believe in the myth of the tyrant they have defeated!!! You and your kind had the straight and the incredible intelligence to replace the Shah (the tyrant according to BBC, VOA, MI6, MI5, CIA and their Media agents) with Khomeini (the representative of Human Rights, The saviour with his picture on the Moon according to BBC, VOA, MI6, MI5, CIA & their Media agents)!

Indeed, you did it & you continue to keep it in place…But only by your ever lasting ignorance. You rather learn your history through Brits or Americans media & ignore the facts, the undeniable truth of Shah’s achievements, his love for his people & his country.

You do not give a damn about Iran or its future. Did you ever built anything in Iran or for Iran?? May be a school, road, university…or a simple toilet?? No YOU DID NOT. You left Iran….leaving others to death & torture…Now seating in you safe heaven, you still have the arrogance of criticizing those who has built Iran.

Before I was hating your kind….now I only have pity.

"NEWS: Here I am speaking

"NEWS: Here I am speaking with you, the son of the last king of Persia, the Shah. If there were still a monarchy, you would be sitting on the throne today. Do you want to go back there?

Reza Pahlavi: My mission today is to help my compatriots free themselves from this regime so they may go to the polls freely and be able to decide their own future. From that day forward, I will stand ready to serve them and my country if I am called upon."

Who can tell me why...?

Who can explain why did shah leave Iran under the supervision of Nato or American officials, when they showed their watch to shah and said " sorry , your majesty, it is time for the departure of your airplane?????

And why the states had its bases on iran's soil??

Is it independence or what???????

Unregistered user

I can tell you....

It is not independence. It is NOKARIIIIIIIIIIIIII.............

May be you can explain why

May be you can explain why Khomeini’s campaign was sponsored by France? Why BBC and VOA presented him as the second Gandhi of our time, the saver, the representative of Human Rights??? Why he was escorted by French arm forces to Iranian borders? Why all his advisors (Naser Minachi, Abdolkarim Soroush, Dr. Ebrahim Yazdi, Sadegh Gotbzadeh were either American or UK spies?? Why 600000 Iranians testified seeing his image on the Moon?

Shah was a Nokar? Tell me brothers… what was Khomeini?? May be the saviour??? May be the saviour is really suppose to send our children on Iraqi mines with a made in China “plastic key to paradise” around their neck??? May be the saviour is really suppose to rape our virgin daughters & sisters in prison before execution??

I don't get it!!! I really don't understand how you can ignore what Khomeini did to our country and our people and keep attacking the Shah.

You are talking about Independence??? They would kill us all to last if we ever were to get even close to independence!! Their heart beats in our region. The blood that runs in the veins of their civilization is pumping from our land. The Shah was only a negotiator...the best we ever had in the last 300 years of our history!!! Do you really believe that Khomeini came to Iran because he was good or sincere? Do you have any clue what he traded, beside the oil, to be able to replace the Shah? He gave them 1 million lives + 800000 handicaps among the most educated young men of Iran!!! He accepted the war with Iraq!!! Do you remember how Khomeini felt when he came: NOTHING….NOTHING!! God Damn his soul for ever.

Be fair in your judgments

Dear Ms. Shohreh A

Usually parents respond to their children based on their understandings, which surely parents are the best judge of character in respect to their children.

The reason your father did not answered your question regarding what is the job of a Shah, is that he knew you would not understand then and regretfully you show that you do not understand now!!!

A brief glance at what Iran was when Reza Shah the Great took over and what Iran was when The Late Shah left Iran and your friends Islamic Republic took over indicate that what Iran and Iranian have lost.

Whomever between Qajar, Pahlavi and Islamic Republic has still issues with Pahlavi to me has a serious problem in distinguishing between good and bad and insulting his/her intelligence.

Ask your beloved Papa, he will tell you what Pahlavi did for Iran and that was their job, Shah's job.

I am not here to promote anybody, but for real Iranian Pahlavi is: Dignity, Peace, Security and above of all Pahlavi = Being proud Iranian.

Best regards
Nikoo

The truth hurts

If the truth hurts Ms Shohreh you must be in a whole heap of pain. Really is this the time to talk about the Shah? And your Papa's inability to answer your childhood questions? Or is it time to use this forum to condemn the execution of an innocent Kurdish soul? Are you working to overthrow the Shah again? Or are you trying to make sure this wretched regime stays in power by discrediting a very viable leader? So at once you have issues with RP of I because of who his father was, what his mother-in-law did or did not do, and because he does not believe Iranians should continue to kill each other...you don't like him because he expressed condolences to widows and orphans? Really? Now what would your Papa say?
The green people in Iran...clearly younger and smarter than you and me....are not rehashing 30, 40, & 50 years ago. They are not protesting the Shah. They are protesting the vicious mullahs & their brutal regime. Really why don't you take your lead from them. You know 30 years ago we were told the Shah's men were responsible for Cinema Rex in Abadan...today we know different. The truth will come out. For now let's stay with the topic at hand which is not your childhood.
It is the squandered youth of a nation. Let's join hands and support them.
And oh by the way....are you going to actually produce the evidence regarding RP's mother-in-law? Or are we supposed to take your word for the documents and photographs? If I prove to you in this insistance someone lied to you big time and you repeated that lie....just a simple private apology...okay...in return for all your slanderous statements?
For your information his mother-in-laws legal name is not what you wrote. She can't travel to Des Moines on that name much less Iran. Don't keep repeating lies...even if you have an agenda...that is the very definition of libel.
