“This country is one big prison with walls built of ideology”

Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez was awarded Latin America's most prestigious prize in journalism in July of this year. Going to pick it up however, has proved impossible. Yoani is forbidden from leaving the country. Just before the awards ceremony was due to take place, she went to the immigration centre - to no avail.

Writer, blogger and linguist, Yoani Sanchez was named one of the most influential people on the planet by Time Magazine in 2008. A year later, she received the Maria Moors Cabot Prize from Columbia University - a reward highly aspired to by Latin American writers.     

Her blog, Generación Y, generates more than 14 million page views per month. According to the Cabot Prize jury, "Generation Y has put the rest of the world in touch with Cuba - at least digitally. (...) It is a pitch-perfect mix of personal observation and tough analysis which conveys better than anybody else what Cubans' daily life - with all its frustrations and hopes - is really like."

She filmed this video on a trip to the office of immigration and migration in Havana, October 12. At 00:25 the image stalls. The audio recording continues. Translation and subtitles by FRANCE 24.

Yoani posted the video on her blog along with the following comment:

I was naive. Right up to the last minute, I thought that the government would change their mind and let me out in time for the awards ceremony, which took place yesterday [Oct. 16].    

I'd saved this footage from a trip to the immigration office on October 12. Today, seeing as the situation hasn't changed [Yoani has been prohibited from travel for a year now]; I decided to publish it, in particular for all those who have gone through similar situations. Due to high emotions and having so much to get out, it's quite hard to understand what I'm saying. But I feel better for having told those people in uniforms exactly what I think of them and their absurd restrictions."

Sad - All the tourists supporting this regime

So sad, we still have these communist enclaves around the world and tourists keep visiting them, helping them stay on a little longer. Don't get me started on the "China's cheap labor supports Capitalism" thing.

I hope the Miami boater can avoid the Cuban Navy and whisk Ms. Sanchez away. But then she would lose her source of inspiration. Sigh.

soy peruano y esta demas decirlo para a quellos q conocen la historia de mi pais q ahi se sobrevive asi como en la mayoria de los paises de latinoamerica donde el gobierno no te ayuda ni te da absolutamente nada sino mas bien te quita con una serie de inpuestos disfrazados q no ayudan entre peru ,ecuador,bolovia,brasil,colombia y parte de argentina y chile es sistema politico no ayuda mucho porq hay gente capacitada con cursos y maestrias q no tienen una opcion laboral debido al mercado hay demasiada oferta y poca demanda laboral casi todos los paise tienen historias de torturas y muertes por pedir cambios o buscar alivio si nos ponemos a buscar en los indices disfrazados vemos q mi pais por ejemplo tiene un una imagen macroeconomica muy atractiva pero si nos basamos en indices del ine nos damos cuenta en mi pasi como en los vecinos diriamente mueren muchos ninos por desnutricion y obiamente ancianos ni q decir existe un cargo para poder cobatir la ignoracia de un aproximado de 40% de la poblacion indigena q es la mayoria y nunca se tomo atencion necesaria para tal efecto muchos turistas llegan y se llevan a parte de las fotos de machupichu o alguna artesia fotos de ninos pidiendo limosna. y pues obiamente la desesperacion de salir de esos paises generan mucha corrupcion ya q todos quieren salir del pais para buscar tambien sus suenos en otro lado cualquien pais q pueda brindarles TRABAJO en mi pais casi nadie califica para una visa exepto aquellos q tengan solvencia economica y puedan probarlo eso me hace suponer despues de tener algunos anos de haber salido observado y tener amigos cubanos profesionales y otros q se aventuraron tambien de mil formas saliendo en blasas (yates de alta potencia ahora) y viajes con documetos falsos y llegar aca y legalizarse con su documetos verdaderos entre todos tienen una consigna buscar y hacer dinero lo de la politica en mi opinion es un medio q usan a favor para recibir muchos beneficios como por ejemplo comparo un cubano llegado con un colombiano y el cubano recibe ayuda economica del gobierno docuemtos para desarrollarse y en muchas veces trabajo y el colombiano .... si no lo deportan tiene q buscar a una cubana para casarse asi de ilogica es la vida EN MI HUMILDE OPINION ES Q NECESITAMOS UN EQUILIBRIO Y SI BUSCAMOS AYUDAR BRIBDEMOS SOLUCIONES CREO Q ES MEJOR Q BUSCAR CAMARA O TITULOS
NOTA : NO ESTOY A FAVOR DE CIERTAS MEDIDAS Q TOMA EL SUPUESTO REGIMEN PERO EN MI HUMILDE OPINION CUBA NO TIENE INDICES DE DESNUTRICION NI TAMPOCO ANALFABETISMOS SI LAS HAY ME GUSTARIA VERLOS ya q en el mundo hay mucha hambre y necesitamos buscar alivio al hambre y a la salud .
