Egypt's most wanted dog

Egyptians are not amused by “I love you, Man” (Paramount Pictures), the latest summer comedy to come from across the Atlantic. The reason: the main character’s dog is named after the country's former president, Anwar Sadat.

In this film, Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) asks his friend Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) his dog’s name, to which Sydney answers : "Anwar Sadat like the Egyptian president (...) Because they are so similar!”. A dog looking like the former president? That’s one joke too many for some Egyptians, who voiced their disappointment in public and even created a Facebook group to get the film off cinema screens.

Anwar Sadat was president of Egypt from 1970 until 1981. He was the first Arab leader to visit Israel and to speak in front of the Knesset in November 1977. Less than a year later, on September 17, 1978, he signed the Camp David Accords, which earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.

"In our culture, describing a man or a woman as an animal […] is considered a huge insult"

Zeinab Mohamed is a journalist in Cairo, Egypt. She protested against the dog's name on her blog.

In our culture, describing a man or a woman as an animal, especially a dog, is considered a huge insult, a sign of disrespect and rudeness. President Sadat was the president of Egypt, its representative and icon. Regardless of his policies inside Egypt I believe it is an insult to all Egyptians. I would even say an insult not only to us but to the Arab world as a whole.

The insulting scenes have been cut in Egyptian cinemas. In fact, according to the censorship board, the copy they received from the studio came without these scenes. The Sadat family reacted fast. Ruqakia Sadat’s [Anwar Sadat’s eldest daughter] lawyer sent an immediate objection memo to the American ambassador and has filed a lawsuit at a court in Cairo to stop the screening of the film in Egypt and to confiscate all of the film's copies in the country.

All the people I have met in the streets are shocked and angry, especially those who saw the clip itself. Even those who do not like Sadat felt that it was a huge insult. This is not a case of the East overreacting or being overly sensitive towards the West. I remember that many Americans did not like it when a company produced a monkey doll named after Obama. This is the same issue.

Zeinab Mohamed - Your culture should treat animals with more respect. They are also God's creatures as are we. Animals and Humans frequently have resemblance factors. I had a collie who looked very much like Barbra Streisand - many people said so.
