“Nobody forces me to wear the full veil, it’s my choice”

The French parliament has launched an inquiry into how many women wear head-to-toe Islamic veils in France. President Nicolas Sarkozy used the occasion to spell out that "the burqa is not welcome in France", leading to concerns that he would ban it in public places. A French Muslim explains to us why she chooses to wear the sitar - the Saudi full-face cover - and why Sarkozy's comments frighten her.

Oum Abdallah (not her real name) lives in Marseille. She's worn the sitar for 10 years.

I'm French, I'm not of Arab origin. The rest of my family is either atheist or agnostic; none of them are Muslim. I decided to convert to Islam well before getting married. Until my wedding day I wore a headscarf but didn't cover my face, and from my wedding day onwards I've worn the sitar. I would have done so earlier but my parents disallowed it while I was still living at home.

I wear the full veil because it's what my religion wants. I dress like the prophet's wives; they're my role models. My husband didn't order me to do this, not at all. He leaves those decisions up to me, even if he does like that I cover up.

"People say that the women aren't respected in Islam, when in fact the religion is based on the well-being of women"

People say that the women aren't respected by Islam, when in fact the religion is based on the well-being of women - at home, as a wife and mother. How many Western women are victims of domestic violence in France today? The sitar is certainly not there to hide black eyes, like some stupid people think! It simply hides the beauty of a woman, which shows how highly they are regarded by Muslim men.

When I'm at home with my husband and my son I dress as I want. When my friends come over (most of whom wear the full veil too), I wear only a veil that covers my body. When I go out or am in the presence of men however, I always wear the sitar.

There's no problem at home. When we have friends over, my husband eats with the men and me with the women in another room... I pass him the plates to serve his guests. He's never seen my friends. Outside however, it can be tricky. People give me funny looks, sometimes insulting me. I leave the house as little as possible; only for things like going to the doctor, admin stuff etc.

"I miss swimming"

Life in France is not easy for a woman who wears the sitar and I dream of leaving. In Muslim countries, there are some beaches and parks especially for women. Of course I miss being able to swim. One of my friends goes to the sea sometimes. But she has to find a completely deserted beach and she swims fully dressed. That's no life. I know very well that in my case it's me who chose to adopt this way of living in France and not the other way round, but that's why I'd like to move to a Muslim country. It's not easy though - my husband would have to find a job first.

"We've talked a lot about if the burqa is banned"

We've talked a lot about if the burqa or the full veil is banned after Sarkozy hinted on it. We're really worried. That would mean that I couldn't leave the house at all! I've just been to get a new ID card, so I'm ok for the next ten years in that sense. But how would I go to the doctor?"

Burqa and Bone Bending Rickets

Perhaps Muslims think everything they need to know is found in the Koran - but what we know is that exposure to natural sunlight prevents the vitamin D deficiency that leads to rickets.

Both in women and in newborns of burqa wearers. Rickets causes bones to bend and become misshapen in children - there has been a rise in cases of rickets in Europe - as well as in the hottest places on earth - places with the most natural sunlight - the Middle East - in Dubai - Saudi Arabia.

The idea that women of Muhammad's time ever wore pure black is questionable. Coloured cloth was always more expensive - and was usually reserved for religious clergy, priest or monks and the wealthy. Saffron yellow is one example.

This blanket covering of women in black - is a modern fantasy or creation.

To show an almost complete disregard for women - which is consistent with women given only 1/3 of rights as men under Shari'a - they are made to wear black in the desert. {If you have been to or lived in a hot country you know in summer you avoid wearing the colour black - including black shoes - particularly around midday) But in the Arabian region women are made to wear black in 50C degree heat - while men wear cool white.

It would have to be through religious conviction not to notice the injustice here.

The English call rickets Dickens disease - because around the time of the industrial revolution - children who were kept indoors in workhouses and rarely saw the sun - developed rickets. I guess you could call the burqa a kind of workhouse for Islam - where women are made to toil under.

head dress

We in the christain world when i was a boy ,catholics would cover thier hair when visiting they place of worship,as a mark of respect,i remeber protestents taking the mickey,,but it was'nt a dictate of religion ,just respect,Never have been prejudical ot hated any nationality, muslims across the western world are free to worship and follow thier religion ,religion is a personal choice.Going to schools and work, or any other situation is not a place of worship.we have churches and you have your place of worship.we in the west have moved on and change our habits .

Naked? I am good piece but I do not think any Arab to watch because I need drugs and he has it as this misery.I hold 2 academic degrees. I won law changes in Sweden so you cannot any longer bring whole tribes as before.Women you catch must provide for you from own money at least 4 years. Shortly, be afraid of my brain, pity yourselfe.
-Women and men eat separete after men speaks of wide range of crimes and abuses.I was presente few times and you would get sick to hear all that. Women cannot hold mouth closed and this is the major reason this Can serve and go.

From bio-medicine news

Everywhere one turns in yemen, one can find men with cheeks bulging bizarrely as they get their fix. It is a shrub whose leaves, when you chew them, can induce mild euphoria, excitement, hallucinations and even constipation.

It is increasingly popular in the country. While a few years ago men would spend a couple of hours a day on their habit, many now chew happily away for seven or eight hours.

Within the last five years or so khat use has become much more accepted among women. Of the country's scarce water, 40% goes on irrigating khat - and khat cultivation is increasing by 10% to 15% a year.

Growing khat earns a yemeni farmer 20 times as much as growing potatoes. In a country where almost half the people live on hardly one US dollar a day, khat income is eminently welcome. Also in a situation of grinding poverty khat-chewing is one of the few affordable sources of pleasure.

burkha

I don't believe for one minute it is your choice to dress like this. You dare not say your husband forces you to do it.

Unregistered user

do you realise that

do you realise that arguement is ridiculous. i don't believe you therefore your wrong. i'm hijaby by choice and i have friends who are niqabi by choice. ie i cover everything but hands and face and they go one step further and cover everything. look we aren't being forced. lol i'm not even married i'm a teenager and i'm raised by a single mother. there really hasn't been any male in my life to force me . i choose to dress this way because i want to please god. i dress modestly and i'm proud of it.

tottaly agree.

I agree muslim women aren't forced to wear the hijab or niqab. its a personal choice which comes from the heart of each and every muslim women. The niqab is worn by most women so as to protect them from nasty/bad glares of men.
