Spot the difference, Saudi style

Images of bare female flesh are banned in Saudi Arabia. There's no efficient system in place for removing the offensive material, however, which means that somebody has the painstaking job of colouring all those arms, legs, midriffs and cleavages that appear on the covers of Western magazines and imported products. The latest cover-up victim: American singer Katy Perry.

“What supreme sacrifices these noble men make for the sake of their fellow Saudi man!”

American blogger "Susie of Arabia", 57, moved to Jeddah almost two years ago with her Saudi Arabian husband. She posted these images on her blog, Susie's Big Adventure, which has just been censored by the Saudi authorities.

Strict censorship is alive and well here in Saudi Arabia. The morality of the citizens is of the utmost importance, and measures are in place to ensure that people behave impeccably, although despite all the enforcement efforts, sometimes people fall short.

Pork in any form is prohibited, and so is pornography. Photos of women in books, magazines and product packaging are routinely censored with black markers if any skin is showing, and sometimes pages are just ripped right out. Sometimes the black marker is just scribbled across the woman's image, like in the photo below of a package for a maternity support belt.

Other times, the censor is much more careful about colouring in the parts of the woman's body that are objectionable.

The other night I went to a music shop to purchase a few CDs for my son, Adam. One of the CDs I got is called “One of the Boys”, by a female artist named Katy Perry.

When he opened up the CD, we were both astonished. I hadn't noticed when I bought it, but the tightly sealed plastic-wrap packaging had been removed and had been replaced with a clear plastic resealable envelope-type wrapper.

So what it all boils down to is that the Saudi government is actually paying religious police members of the Committee for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice to remove the plastic wrap from these CDs, open up the CD cases, remove the front and back inserts and carefully and painstakingly colour in with a marker any photos baring exposed female flesh that is deemed objectionable. What supreme sacrifices these noble men make for the sake of their fellow Saudi man!

(The CPVP is a government agency that employs religious police, called Muttawa, to make sure that citizens adhere strictly to the teachings of Islam, especially those pertaining to dress, socialization, morality and prayer. The commission comprises approximately 10,000 Muttawa and has nearly 500 centres within the country.)

Comments

This reminds me...

...that Ms Perry does actually have a nice pair of legs. But there's another debate worth having: the difference between accepted levels of nudity in US and European advertising.

thank you for this comment.

thank you for this comment. how true it is. the US and americans need to get over themselves and realize that if other countries want to have a certain level of modesty, that's their right. they're not putting burkas on the photos...who cares? it may be mildly interesting, but definitely not something that should be shocking.

i think it is logical.
the saudis are doing what majority in their country think like that. they consider it bad to be nude or half nude.
they have their right to do that.
is it not democracy???
i am surprised who object this or making fun of????

There is no democracy in

There is no democracy in Islam. Islam is a political system in which women Christians and Jews have no rights to speak of. Look at the life of Mohammed. He married a nine year old girl! He also married one of his son's wives. Bi-sexual behavior among men in Muslim countries is rampant, but they will never admitt to being gay and don't even acknowledge that behavior as long as they have a women or four at home poping out babies.

Saudi Arabia isn't a

Saudi Arabia isn't a democracy. So saying this is "the will of the people" is far beside the truth.

Unregistered user

That's fantastic, progress

That's fantastic, progress and modernity should not have to mean nudity and immodesty everywhere you look.

Unregistered user

Well that depends on what

Well that depends on what you consider "Nudity and immodesty". There is no global consensus on what is immodest.

There are still people in the world who spend their day to day lives nude and don't bat an eye.

In Japan women have their entire legs bare but will not uncover their shoulders.

It's cultural. There is no magic sky wizard who determines what is and is not modest.

"Get educated, hope your reaction ,it is intended as a joke"

The only problem with the previous comment is a little naivity although a logical point of view. If the world was perfect people would always prioritise and put practical realities above extranious abstract concepts because life is difficult enough without imparting unnecesary ill concieved restraints on lives. The right thing to do would be to remove teaching specific religions from schools and promote self derived conclusions and if one reaches the conclusion there is a god they needn't be bound by rituals that got out of hand a long long time ago.

I AGREE WITH RYAN: LET'S

I AGREE WITH RYAN: LET'S FORGET ABOUT ALL RELIGION. SEXUALITY IS A TOTALLY NATURAL AND NORMAL THING. THESE RELIGIONS TRY TO BAN AND MOLEST NATURE BY SHAMING SEXUALITY: IT IS PART AND PARCEL A CENTRAL PART OF EVOLUTION.

Unregistered user

Oh yes

Who defines sexuality you?
how about sex with animals, or with kids, should that be part of your sexual revolution as well?.
Do yourself a favor, Keep your evil to yourself, muslims don't need your lame opinion. I bet you are a gay or a pedophile, that is why you are advocating these sick ideas.

It's not the action, but the message

The real problem isn't the censorship, but the underlying message propagated by that censorship. As has been pointed out, cultural and national standards differ, but the repression of people in general, and of women in the muslim world in particular, is intolerable. If it truly was the will of the people to be repressed, why do places like that need secret police? Surely a culture that adopted a code of strict morality would not need an army of vice and virtue enforcers.

Those who defend repressive prectices would do well to remember your support would not help you if you were accused, righfully or wrongfully, of wrongdoing. You would have the same rights as everyone else...virtually none.

The West and its morale superiority complex

The emphasis should be on western women who are subject to great humiliation, and disrespect. for instance in the US, young girls are driven to work as prostitutes, stripers, and bar maids. The rate of women incarcerated in American prisons is the largest in the world. Their media portrays a nauseating amount of raped girls, sometimes by their own close relatives such a an uncle or father. The number of Women shot by their husbands or boyfriends is staggering. The statistics are available online, a simple Google search will revel this utterly catastrophic reality of American society.
Courts are flooded with sexual harassment cases. In the work place a woman is bombarded by sexual comments, especially by senior staff.
Adult age is set at 18, by girls are encouraged to start "experimenting" sexually that is much earlier, recently a young girl of 12 got pregnant. Some of them even dump their newly born babies into trash bins, fearing the financial obligations related to child rearing.
For those who assume a moral superiority towards muslims, turn off that giant flat screen TV, trash that 6 packs of beer, and grab a book. A mind is terrible think to waste.

Closeminded

You are two broad in your sweeping views.

It could be said that a muslim women is married at 12 let alone become pregnant. If that young person throws away a baby they are still a child themselves and do not fully understand their actions. They need education not stoning to death.

Prostitution is the world's oldest profession, blaming that on 'western culture' of the last 250 is being a bit nieve.

Free speech should be left up the individual to censor not the goverment. If you don't like something then don't buy it, don't read it, or don't watch it.

If goverments are allowed to censor based of their ideology and not the individual then there is no end to what will be censored.

Our source is the Koran

Your blindness has no cure!. have it your way, follow your animalistic instinct. Everyone is free to choose, sex, drugs, teenage pregnancy, gambling, incest...etc !!!!!!!.
Islam does not allow your type of chaotic lifestyle! it is a way of life prescribed by God not by Freud, Darwin,Marx, or aristotle.
Do Saudis dictate how Westerners should lead their lives? Therefore, you have no right to impose your views on them.
They should ban all these pornographic magazines!!. How about exporting scientific or literary books to Saudia Arabia. The west prefers to dump its intellectual waste on muslim countries. Stop using women as merchandise to sell your filthy magazines. You can easily market a product without having women show their naked breasts and behinds.
