The cyberactivist Mohammed Adel faces charges of terrorism in Egypt. To express their support, a group of Egyptian bloggers have launched a satirical "Operation General Dead". Their "pro-terrorism" campaign is so realistic Facebook has decided to censor it.
Mohammed Adel, nicknamed "Dead", is a blogger and IT student in his early 20s. He was arrested late November by Egyptian authorities under charges of "terrorism" and "links to an illegal organisation". His crime: taking pictures of himself as he brandished a Hamas Kalashnikov during a trip organised by the "Popular committee against the Gaza siege" in 2008, prior to the Israeli assault.
The pictures, posted on his blog, were used by Egyptian authorities to indict him. Mohammed Adel is known for his stinging criticisms of President Hosni Mubarak. Arguing that the charges brought against him are an outright fabrication, several Egyptian bloggers and activists have decided to express their support by committing the same "crime". In a series of pictures posted on the Web, they can be seen posing with fake weapons, adopting hostile mimics and parodying the bearing of Islamist militants.
Wael Abbas is one of the Egyptian bloggers behind the campaign.
We wanted to draw the attention of the media and the public to Mohammed
Adel's case and to make a mockery of the accusations put forward by the secret
services. Some of our photos have been erased by Facebook because they were
thought to go against the site's chart, as explained in the warning I received.
Two photos of a friend carrying a fake gun were thus erased because they
allegedly incited violence. This is absurd - it's simply a toy! Facebook
apparently received a host of comments from Web users who wanted the pictures
censored. In my view, Egyptian security services must've been behind the
alerts. They'd already used this method in the past to get rid of videos I
posted on YouTube."
With one finger pointing to the sky in the manner of an Islamist militant, Wael Abbas ironically dons the title of "Mullah".
The Egyptian blogger Mina Zekry is a co-founder of the "Bloggers for terrorism" group.
The pictures of Mohammed
carrying a gun were meant to be souvenirs, a way for him to show solidarity
with the Palestinian cause. The security
services used the photos as a pretext to accuse him of all sorts of crimes.Beyond Adel's case, this campaign is also intended to denounce an autocratic regime that attempts to repress opponents, activists and journalists under the guise of a state of emergency, martial law and the threat of terrorism. As the recent attack in Khan al-Khalili pointed out, they have far more pressing issues to deal with. Our campaign is also a critique of the authorities' vague definition of terrorism, blurring resistance, personal convictions and terrorism."
The "misr digital" website, spearhead of the satirical movement, describes its collaborator Mina Zekry in the following terms: "a Copt blogger, known to security services as a member of the Muslim Brothers and an agent of the German secret services".
The human rights activist Noov Sinari, another member of "Operation General Dead".
On the group's Facebook page four bloggers are clad in black in the manner of the Black Panthers. The weapons are plastic.
The blogger Satigraha - nicknamed after the principle of non-violence famously advocated by the Mahatma Gandhi - is in charge of the "military wing of Photoshop".
Robin Hood's official lookalike, Shahinaz Abdel Salam has also joined the movement.
Abir Al-Askari takes part in the operation clad in an army uniform.

As if they needed Facebook to shut their voices!
Submitted by Falastine on Thu, 05/03/2009 - 14:09.Its such a pitty that when young people express their point of view in the Arab world, they get arrested and opressed by the terrany of their local authorities. And now that they found a way to express themselves on an online social network, like facebook, they get censored! I dunno what bothers facebook about it when the content of it is totally ironical and its SO obvious to be so, even to non arabic readers who might surf that group!!!
