Is seven-year-old Madin the next Zinedine Zidane?

After this article was published we were contacted by Madin's mother, who wanted to precise some of the details given, which have now been modified. She stressed that her and her husband take great care in protecting their son and that they are not planning to throw him to the lions by signing him up with an agent.

A seven-year-old French boy hit the headlines in Britain this week after videos of his fancy footwork became a massive online hit with over a million views. The UK tabloid press hailed him as the next Zinedine Zidane and reported various tall tales about the schoolboy, who was only six when the video was filmed.

Both the British and the Spanish press were in raptures over the boy, even reporting that he'd received calls from football clubs Real Madrid and Chelsea.

But with a bit of research, they would have found out that the video was over a year old. Madin Koroghli (not Mohammed), from northern French town Roubaix, is seven-years-old, not six as was said in the British papers. He'd already had his 15 minutes of fame in his home country after appearing on French channel TF1's Téléfoot programme. And yet he hadn't been headhunted by any foreign clubs. In fact this season he's playing at... Lille OSC, for free.

Two people who've seen this young footballer play tell us what they think about the Madin phenomenon - is he the next Zidane or just a kid with fancy footwork?

Do you follow football? What do you think - is Madin the next Zidane?

"He can do anything with a ball"

Christian Lazaoui is a friend of Madin's father. A coach from Roubaix, he's followed the young footballer since the beginning.

All this buzz around Madin started when his uncle posted the video on YouTube. Journalists from Téléfoot made a report about him and afterwards it was just crazy. His dad got all sorts of phone calls from sponsors, managers etc. As he wanted to protect his son, he turned them all down. But the managers wouldn't let it go. They went to the big clubs, and that is where, I imagine, the rumours about a transfer to Real Madrid came from. That said, I do think he's incredible. I've followed him since I was little and he can do anything with a ball. He can tackle two or three kids the same age and not many people can do that. I think he has a gift, he's quick, and he can handle LOSC."

"All this hype is out of proportion"

André Lazaoui - Christian's brother - is president of Roubaix Hommelet football club, where Madin used to play.

He played two seasons with us. I don't know where he is now. It's true that he is a cut above the rest- I've never seen such a good player so young. However, all this hype is out of proportion. We work a lot with Lille OSC [football club]. They don't pick up such young players any more, they let them stay in small clubs like ours until they're older. Sometimes they recruit players from us and we don't hear anything of them after a few years. It's impossible to know if someone so young will come through. At 11 or 12, that's when we can start to bet on a player, but not at six. Madin should be left to play in the street with his mates. Puttin this video on YouTube wasn't necessarily a good idea."
