Gun ownership: a right or a hazard?

guns-m.jpg

The United States constitution gives an individual the right to own and bear arms. However, fatal shootings in the past, many involving teenagers, have made gun control a hot topic in US politics. We asked our Observers if they felt it was important to own a gun for personal safety.

"Hypocrites push for gun control"

Alex Stone Dale, former cab driver, Manhattan NY (Republican)

I don’t own a gun because in New York it’s extremely illegal to own one.

One night back in 1987 I stopped in Times Square and picked up a carload of what the uncharitable would describe as 'thugs' around 3:00 a.m.

A carload meant four passengers – three in the back seat and one in the front seat. Most cab drivers wouldn’t stop to pick up four youths at that time - if they’d stop at all. (Back then cab drivers were twice as likely to die on the job as the distant number two-place job on the list – police.) A sense of humour helped.

I asked them where they were going and they said "Bushwick".

At the time the three worst neighborhoods in New York City were all in Brooklyn and they abutted each other in an unholy triangle: East New York, Bushwick and Brownsville.

“I’m only taking you on one condition.”

“What’s that?”

“That you all have guns. That neighborhood is dangerous as hell and there’s no way I’m dropping you all off there this late at night unless you can protect yourselves.”

When they were all done laughing I got to explain something to them that they hadn’t thought of.

“The only reason that Democrats push gun control is that nothing scares them more than the thought of a black man with a gun. All the loudest proponents of gun control laws either have ‘carry permits’ or they surround themselves with armed bodyguards. They don’t push gun control laws to keep guns out of their own hands – because they know that they’ll always be able to get them – they push gun control laws to keep guns out of your hands.

I’m a Republican. I want to see a gun in the hand of every African American in the entire country - including you."

"Protecting ourselves from vermin"

Ernesto Haibi, US Army medic, Copperas Cove TX (Independent)

I have owned multiple guns my whole life and am an avid shooter.

Violent crime in America has dropped consistently for the past 16 years and there are more guns than ever. In Washington DC and New York where no guns are allowed, there are astronomical crime rates.

No one should fear a law-abiding citizen owning a gun just as no one should fear a sober man behind the wheel of a car.

Many say that you are more likely to have an accident with the gun than use it for defense. Every year in America there are about 500 accidental shootings. At the same time 1,500 children a year die drowning in five-gallon buckets. BAN BUCKETS.

Do this: in the next telephone directory place a "Y" next to all the gun owners and an "N" next to all the non-gun owners. After one year go back and see how many "Y's" were robbed.

A Secret Service agent once told me, "Guns cause crime like flies cause garbage." Crime is everywhere and will always be there. Society will always have degenerates that prey on the kindness or weakness of others. The least we can do for them, and ourselves, is give the chance for an ordinary citizen to defend himself from the vermin that every country has within it."

"'Clinging' to the home security system instead of guns"

Linda Sharp, parenting writer, Austin TX (independent)

Sen. Barack Obama stated in the primaries that when people are frightened, they tend to "cling" to those things which make them feel more secure.

He spoke specifically of guns and religion.

Well, yes people do. Religion is clung to for comfort, as a rock on a stormy sea. Hell, how many churches across the land are filled on Sundays with people singing "I shall cling to the old rugged cross"?

As far as guns? Good lord, they cling so tightly I'm surprised the damned rifles still shoot straight.

My father was in the Air Force when I came along. Both my sister and I were born on an Air Force base. I remember growing up in a house filled with medals, trophies, ribbons - all of which bespoke the tremendous control my father wielded with a gun in his hands. He passed that knowledge, control, and respect for weapons down to my siblings and I.

I learned to hold a gun when I was five years old. And like holding a pair of scissors, I was instructed, in detail, as to the correct way to do so. Growing up, I held all manner of weaponry, from BB guns to rifles.

My siblings and I were not taught about them as a means to hunting game, but as a means of learning a discipline. I shot many a beer can right between the eyes as I practiced my marksmanship. I have been to firing ranges in my adult life.

I am able to hit the target as I was taught. I can plant myself as to absorb the tremendous force of the backfire which can take a less ready person off their feet. In amusement parks, I can easily win you a stuffed animal by shooting the laser at the targets.

But do I own a gun these days? No, I do not.

Could I? Of course. I live in Texas. I could not only own one, but get the permit to carry it on my person.

As my husband travels three weeks out of every four, I toy with the idea. After all, I am alone with our three daughters. But for now, I am content to "cling" to our home security system and a Pomeranian who will warn me if anyone even sets foot in the driveway.

Obama does not want to take guns away from the people who respect them and use them properly. He simply understands the gray area which currently exists allowing teenagers to cling to them and turn their high schools into shooting galleries.

And in those games there are no stuffed animals or winners."

"Gun ownership is allowed for the right reasons"

Jim Wilkinson, business owner, Mercedes TX (Republican)

I am a gun owner. Our Constitution allows for individual gun ownership for good reason.

Here in Texas, as well as in other rural areas across the United States, guns are used for protection as well as sport.

Ninety-nine percent of gun owners use firearms responsibly. That's a far better average then those who drive cars.

Politicians who argue that citizens should no longer have the right to own a gun are ignorant at best.

We've all heard the cliche....if citizens were not allowed to have guns, then only criminals would have guns. In nearly every instance of gun violence....it takes a gun to end it."

"A gun's sole purpose is to cause harm"

Julissa Reynoso, attorney,New York (Democrat)

I grew up in the South Bronx in the 1980s New York City and I knew many people with guns (both legal and illegal).

The 1980s in New York City were the Wild Wild West.

My family didn't own a gun - although I am sure with the crime sweeping the Bronx those years, buying a gun crossed my father's mind.

We knew many neighbors that had fallen victim to gun violence. In fact, I, the summer before heading off to Harvard for college, was held up at gun point by a random, gun carrying druggie.

I was raised in the belly of the beast in New York City and I am convinced that a gun's' sole purpose is to cause harm.

Don't get me wrong. I am an attorney and understand the Second Amendment. But a full understanding of the intentions of the drafters of the Second Amendment is necessary to assess the Amendment's implementation.

At its core, the Amendment is supposed to protect citizens from the federal government's arbitrary imposition of a militia or military rule.

What are the chances of that happening - at least on U.S soil? Indeed, proponents of so called "gun rights" don't fully understand the Second Amendment or our current realities.

Gun control is folly...

Many gun control proponents really just don't like firearms, so they support the passage of laws that make it more difficult to keep and use firearms. Some gun control supporters actually believe that gun control laws will improve public safety (even though the vast majority of empirical evidence says otherwise). Whatever their motivation, virtually all gun control advocates are ignorant of the history of gun control:

During the 20th Century, it was GOVERNMENTS, not terrorists or criminals, who murdered the largest number of innocent civilians on this planet. In addition, severe gun control (or outright gun bans) preceded all of the most notorious cases of governmental abuse, as happened in Ottoman Turkey, Nazi Germany, the former Soviet Union, China, and Cambodia. Clearly, gun control has historically paved the way for tyranny, and has not reduced violent crime.

If those gun control supporters were truly concerned about public safety and welfare, they would support civilian ownership of firearms as a check against governmental abuse.

"clinging" to your home security system...

Linda Sharp is content to rely on her home 'security' system... That's just fine by me as long as you keep your fingers out of MY RIGHT to choose to defend myself.

I've tested home 'security' systems, 3 times I set off entry alarms, 3 times got ZERO response. a couple more times and the house phone rings with the 'security' company calling to see if everythings ok...

...Pay attention here Linda... WHEN I had THREE men burst through my front door and come charging up the stairs my wife started to call for help, but before she could finish dialing *I* settled the incident with my .45. This was all in about 15 seconds... the two times the 'security' company called, it was more than fifteen MINUTES.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE POLICE TO ARRIVE WHEN YOUR 'SECURITY' SYSTEM ALERTS? ...Yep, you guessed it... You are DEAD...

Choose, or choose not to defend yourself, but realize that the police are under NO obligation to protect you, nor can they be there in time to.

Next, look at history, DC banned guns in 1976, they have had the highest murder rates in all but one year since.
Kennesaw GA, on the other hand passed a law REQUIRING gun ownership in 1987. Their crime has fallen to ZERO since, and that with their population more than doubling.

Now instead of spewing party drivel, take the time to look up obama's voting record yourself, and you'll see that he's NOT planning to leave my rights alone.

Linda (apparently) believes Obama's rhetoric

It is obvious that Ms. Sharp hasn't looked into this issue and/or isn't thinking for herself. Obama's voting record speaks volumes. He has never, EVER, voted in opposition to a gun control bill or proposal, or voted in favor of gun rights. Period.

Obama said he agreed with the Supreme Court decision in Heller, and he claimed to support the Second Amendment (although he is careful to never use the term "rights"). However, Obama has also stated that he believed that the draconian D.C. gun laws were constitutional. I find this worrisome and disturbing from someone who aspires to be the President of our country. Senator Obama was a constitutional law professor, yet he does not seem to understand that a civil right that can be abrogated by the government is no right at all – it is a privilege!

Linda Sharp is hearing what she wants to hear – she does not want to believe that Obama is being disingenuous or dishonest. The fact is that Obama is either obtuse or he is a liar. I believe that he is an intelligent man, and I therefore conclude that he is lying about his position and beliefs regarding the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

It is truly unfortunate that Senator Obama lacks the integrity to tell the American people where he REALLY stands on the issue of gun rights.

Senator Obama never stood up

Senator Obama never stood up for the rights of lawful gun owners in Illinois. In-fact, he voted for legislation to further restrict and criminalize legal gun ownership in a bill which would have required SURRENDER of firearms already in possession within 90 days of the laws enactment (SB1195, 2003). He lied in the presidential primary debates about his documented support (from TWO separate political surveys with his handwriting on them) of a ban on all semi-automatic firearms, as well as one on all handguns. Chicago already has a total ban on handgun and most long-gun ownership, and Obama has never challenged that. In fact, he was in the small MINORITY of the state legislature in voting against a protection from weapons-charges for people who use a gun in otherwise lawful self-defense in their home.

In 2004 Obama told the Chicago Tribune that he supported Federal legislation to outlaw concealed-carry nationwide, and has said he doesn't believe in the concept. In the US Senate he voted for an amendment by Ted Kennedy which would set such a low and vague threshold for banning armor piercing ammunition that it would, by its wording and definitions, ban nearly all hunting ammo designed for anything besides the smallest game (amdt.1615 to S.397 2005). If you believe that Senator Obama actually believes the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to arms, you clearly weren't paying attention in the primary debates when he said in the next breath that he believes the Washington D.C. gun ban, which the Supreme Court was about to overturn, was, in-fact, constitutional, even though it was a complete and total ban on possession, at any time, of a functional firearm in the jurisdiction, even in one's own home by people without criminal records! It banned banned mere-posession of any handguns or semi-automatic firearms. The ban included no exception for self-defense, even under immediate threat. He considers the ban a viable method for, to paraphrase him, keeping AK-47s out of the hands of gang-bangers. It also would have kept an operable, single-shot shotgun out of the hands of a 60 year old widow with no criminal record if someone was breaking down her door with a hatchet. The brilliant constitutional law scholar doesn't see his position as contradictory, though.

If you check the record and re-read all of Obama's statements about gun rights, he always parses his words in a way which leaves room for anything short of a federal law confiscating already-owned weapons (though he HAS voted for a confiscation bill!). Furthermore, he's never renounced any of his prior positions, votes, or statements-- only talked around them or deflected the questions. I haven't even given a comprehensive list here!

I challenge you to research his statements with what I've said in mind-- check his voting record, check his statements from before the presidential campaign, and then ask yourself if you'd have more options than just your alarm system and an average 9 minute wait for the police to photograph your body if Senator Obama is able to enact the gun-control laws he's supported for his entire political career.

Sincerely,
Mike Abrams

In what ways has Barrack

In what ways has Barrack Obama fought for the second amendment. In fact, his record shows that he has never did anything but oppose it during his whole political career. It amazes me how he can claim to believe in the second amendment, when he used to be a leader in the Joyce Foundation, a group for gun control research. I am going to make this short and sweet because i could fill fifty pages on instances where Obama has taken an anti-gun view. Obama is lying to gun owners, and that is the bottom line. If you don't believe me, look at his voting record. If you can find one instance where he has voted in favor of gun owners let me know. Barrack Obama, I am a Bitter gun owner and a Bitter guy with a strong faith in god from Wisconsin and you are not getting my vote. I doubt you will get rural Americas vote either until you start sticking up for us and our beliefs. All I can say is, if you want to protect our second amendment right, vote for John McCain on November 4.

Sincerely,
Justin Bird

Hello there! Living in

Hello there!

Living in America must not be easy, it looks like most people that have written here are afraid to live without the gun in their house. I have been in the United States of America for a few months and as a European I see that Americans like their guns much more than Europeans do.

The thing that people have to understand is that if it's easy to get a gun, it is easy for everyone to get a gun. The crime rate in America is very high compared to most other European countries, so it's probably natural that people feel insecure. But I do think that having more guns in distribution is more dangerous. If everybody fights with sticks and fists, less people will be hurt them when people fight with guns.
