In an attempt to escape the "boring" box that Apple has firmly placed it in, Microsoft is spending $300 million on a full scale marketing blitz. After a disappointing reaction to the first stage - the Seinfeld ads that nobody understood - stage two, "I'm a PC", was launched on Thursday.
Apple has gone from strength to strength in the past decade and in 2006 felt itself strong enough to start bashing its biggest - and once much stronger - competitor. After years of losing face to the ‘Get a Mac' campaign, Microsoft has launched a direct attack in response.
The first part of the campaign, a somewhat confusing and not all that funny pair of videos featuring 90s sitcom star Seinfeld, was largely ignored. After just two weeks of airtime, the ads have been replaced (some say they were pulled early). On Thursday, a series of TV and viral clips featuring a collection of supposed PC users from around the world emerged. Opening with Microsoft employee Sean Siler, who says "I'm a PC and I've been made into a stereotype", the various PC users then demonstrate just how eclectic and exciting they are. Microsoft is spending around $300 million (€210m) on the marketing blitz, which will introduce their new slogan "Life Without Walls".
One of the Apple ads that criticised Microsoft in a campaign that's spanned the past two years.
One of the two bizarre ‘Seinfeld meets Gates' ads. Seinfeld's said to be paid $10 million for what lasted only two weeks (so far). Funnily enough, it wasn't PCs but Apple Macs that the character used in the 90s series. Mac even devoted an advert to Seinfeld after the very last episode.
One of the ads from the second part of the campaign, launched on Thursday. The ads are entitled "Pride".

IF microsoft wants to beat Mac it needs to do one thing.
Submitted by seattle (not verified) on Sun, 21/09/2008 - 05:19.It's not about where Microsoft is going to take us today, it's about the FACT that Microsoft INTENTIONALLY creates it's products with bugs, errors, or programs that just don't work.
Microsoft wants to improve it's market share, MAKE JUST ONE PRODUCT WORK!!!!
Microsoft makes an internet browser that can't even tell if it's connected to the internet, it continually freezes up because it refuses to do what it is told by the user.
Microsoft wants to put ads on tv that show what people already know, that NOBODY at Microsoft is intouch with reality, real people, and they really don't care to be!
