Who does he think he is? The Messiah? That's the message a recent McCain TV ad, which likens Obama to Charleton Heston's Moses, seems to project. Viewed over one million times on YouTube, the video finally landed on a CNN television report, intended to "de-bunk the rumour" but giving it de-facto international coverage in the process.
McCain's campaign aides have described the video as merely "poking fun at Obama's tendency to get carried away with audacious statements". In fact, its content eerily echoes the "question" that has been raised in a minority of right-wing Christian circles: is Obama the Antichrist?
Some claim they see clear similarities between the figure described in the book of Revelation - a charismatic, crowd-pleasing leader with an evil heart who rallies the world around a false message of peace - and the Democratic candidate. According to Eric Sapp, a Democratic consultant on faith issues, the video clip is largely inspired by the bestselling Christian fiction series Left Behind, which recounts the rise of a young and brilliant politician who, after portraying himself as a pacifist, leads the world into chaos and war.
It's unclear whether this McCain ad voluntarily refers to the myth of an Antichrist as Obama, or even whether such a campaign can affect the vote of Christian Americans. One thing is for sure: the controversy has created a buzz on the web, complete with marketing accessories - T-shirts, mugs, you name it - portraying the ‘satanic Democrat'.

Brian Kirby is the Pastor of Emmanuel International Church, a moderate Evangelical congregation based in Rueil Malmaison, in the outskirts of Paris. Originally from North Carolina, he moved to France six years ago.
The Antichrist is a character from the Book of Revelations, the last chapter of
the New Testament. Some believe that the events described in the book took place
in a distant past, thousands of years B.C., but most Americans think that the
book predicts the future, foretelling events that have yet to
come.Grossly put, the Antichrist is described as a key political figure, very charismatic, who rapidly rises to power. He promises peace and rallies the world around a common false religion, only to plunge it into war and chaos. This is a simplified version that interprets the complex imagery of the Bible, but it's the one that stands out in many Christians' imaginations. Americans also usually consider that the Antichrist will rise somewhere in the Middle East, although the Bible never explicitly says that the Antichrist is of Muslim descent.
In recent years there has been a concerted effort amongst Republicans to associate their party with Christianity, in particular with right-wing Christians. This has become true to such an extent that most people don't even believe that you can be an Evangelical Christian and vote Democrat, which is precisely my case.
Americans tend, much more than Europeans I think, to vote for a candidate based on their emotions, on how they feel about him, more than on what they think of his political ideas and of specific policies. So this type of video and rumor could eventually do some damage. Even if there were Evangelicals who were thinking of maybe voting Obama, any doubt on his Christianity would immediately change their minds.
I think that comparing Obama to the Antichrist is a gross exaggeration, a farce. It's like the people who insist on Obama's Muslim origins although he has been very open about his personal spiritual journey, his conversion to Christianity and his baptism. When I go back to North Carolina, I'm faced with people who tell me "I could never vote for a Muslim". It's dangerous rhetoric."

Antichrist?
Submitted by Tarcis Daniel (not verified) on Wed, 03/09/2008 - 00:43.I've been analyzing the Obama Mccain presidential campaign in the last month from Italy. I was very struck when I came across your blog. I will try to explain my point of you, with the words of a profound and dedicated believer.
I don't think you need scriptures to remember that God is Love. You are with God when you are in harmony. I think a true believer wouldn't feel fear or hatred even in front of the devil itself. A believer fights evil day by day just like when extinguishing an unwanted fire: he pours water on it, without hating the fire itself.
By contrast, a believer with hatred in its heart, is possessed by evil. He is not fully loyal to his Law.
If you keep calling and recalling the antichrist this entity will possess your mind and the more you talk about it the more it will grow in yourself, and around yourself.
The way i see it, the antichrist is never just a single person. It is a broader spiritual happening bringing chaos, death and hatred involving various persons and emergent influences of the system.
The antichrist is not a single episode: it is recurrent. It happens on a small scale or in a macro scale. Hitler is one example.
Any sexual abuse could be a micro example.
If Christ is love, the antichrist is fear, a phenomenon that tends to kill life at its root.
When fear becomes collective, evil takes easily its seat at the top. Could you imagine what would happen if the majority of americans were persuaded that Obama is the antichrist? There would be a climate of collective terror and fear. When people become irrational, it is easier for the bad guys (the knights of apocalypse in the bible) to take power.
This is to say: if you are a believer and don't like Obama, just keep it rational, don't vote for him, promote McCain and so on. If you guys keep obsessing with horrible concepts like the antichrist, you are just disseminating fear inside and outside yourself.
I was watching the campaign through videos on the net, and I found that the only "weird" thing going on is that you have a black man running for elections, with a communications team that works much better than McCain's. There is much well paid professional advisory work behind Obama, and the guy is naturally talented to talk at crowds. He is very much on the left. It is normal to feel disgusted when looking at fans the opposing candidate. It happens all the time to me with Berlusconi's folks.
But i do not think that Berlusconi himself is the antichrist. I just think he is a son of the times.
Take it easy, Obama will not win these elections because i think it is very unlikely for a black candidate to win. If you feel disgusted by his messianic styles, just do your activist work, but please do not mess around with highly polluting concepts like the antichrist. It is just a highly obsessing and useless concept. And it sound very weird from a European perspective to aknowledge that electors in the most powerful nation in the world are thinking in these terms.

The True God doesn’t support any political candidates
Submitted by Payday Loan Advocate (not verified) on Tue, 16/09/2008 - 12:10.Jesus Christ did not support any political leader in this world and even Jesus Christ did not accept the offer of Satan to become ruler of this world. What he did is to preach the incoming Kingdom of God that will destroy all the wicked system in this world and will bring true peace and security. In other words the true God doesn’t support any political candidates or any political practices.

It doesn't show much intelligence on their side.
The logic would be those actions giving a bad image of republicans using very childish technics to win sympathy. Unfortunatly, there isn't much logic in the topic, only a certain form of passion.

The real America from a real American.
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Sat, 23/08/2008 - 00:56.Speak for yourself please. If you actually look at the facts, you would find that test scores in math and science scores in the US are actually quite strong (link at bottom of paragraph). Young American's are more politically informed and active than ever before, and a higher percentage go on to enroll at universities than in the past. While I do not think that the US has even close to the best educational system in the world, I believe your view is misguided and incorrect. I am from a very small rural Alabama town, which would make most people assume that I can neither read or write. I actually maintain an A average in college while pursuing a double major in political science and finance. I am also an Obama supporter, and avid follower of US and world politics. While this article does mention that only a "small minority" of Americans actually think that Obama is some sort of antichrist, it is an obvious piece of propaganda to portray United States citizens as ignorant. Can you think of a county where a "small minority" of its' populations doesn't have extremist views? Please do not let this article mold your view of America. The average American is an educated, informed voter. I would hardly consider that idiotic. I hope the election of Obama will once again bring us closer to our ever-so-important European allies. The reputation of America has been tarnished by recent unfortunate policy decisions, but not beyond repair. True, I am a proud American, but I have great respect for other cultures and nations of the world. The future success of the world depends upon the success of multilateralism, the spread of education, and a better understanding of one another.

Another Real American
Submitted by unregistered user (not verified) on Sat, 23/08/2008 - 18:29.In my hometown, here in the South, recently a high school honor student, straight 4.0 average, valedictorian of her granduating class, started college and had to take remedial courses because most of the university's freshman courses were over her head.
I saw another girl on the Oprah show, when Bill and Melinda Gates were on not long ago. Same scenario. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I was one of those girls. Depressed is an understatement.
On May 15, this past year, I was a in a panel discussion for the Regional Summit on Innovations in Education: Empowering the Grassroots with Educational Options. Part of the No Child Left Behind act. There were delegates from all the states. I represented Special Needs Education. I got there early, even though my panel was last. I sat through all of the other discussions.
I heard one black mother tell how she graduated from high school in the projects and never knew math except basic elementary school addition and subtraction. She didn't want her children to suffer that fate.
Another family, dirt poor, black, talked about how helpless they feel trying to get a good education for their children. It's a steep hill they have to climb with lots of pitfalls every step of the way.
On and on it went. Delegates got up and spoke about the initiatives they were working on to curb this basic wrong in our society. Some of them were doing a good job in their states. They talked about DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, the Federal Charter School Program, and other Federal Initiatives. It was heartening to hear of these advances, but I knew it was only a drop in the bucket of abject poverty and related lack of educational opportunities here in America.
Obama speaks to mostly that scenario when he talks about Education. His own people. Bill Cosby has spoken on this subject in depth. I grew up in the inner city in the North. I was one of about half the white sudent population. I got a good education. That was a long, long time ago. The late '50s and 'early '60s. When my younger sisters attended the same school years later, it was mostly gang-war and very little education. The neighborhood had gone down, and so had the school.
It's impossible to equate our educational system in this country with that of decades ago. It's worse. It's failing so many students. My daughter is a school teacher, along with two neices, and I have a sister-in-law who just retired after 32 years. Their stories tell a lot. My husband taught special ed classes a few years ago at an inner city school. His stories are almost unbelievable.
As a Christian, I believe there are so many issues that need tending to and radical reform that you almost have to pick the most important to you. My pastor said recently, on the right-to-life issue, every human being has the right to life, not just unborn babies. What about the men and women in Iraq? The Americans being killed and the Iraqis being killed as well. What about the people who live in desolate poverty with no way out? What about their children who will stay in the projects and never get enough education to get out? What about the old and sick who can't afford the medicine they need to stay alive? What about the people who have millions and lots of houses and don't want to change anything in the country? Hard decisions.

I live in the south as well, graduated high school over a decade or so, and having returned to college this past year to finish my degree I am constantly amazed at how far standards have fallen, especially with regards to composition. Work that certainly would have earned a 'C' when I first attended college is now somehow 'A' work. There are still some teachers who maintain standards, but they are few and far between (generally hated by the majority of students but admired by those who understand they are protecting the value of their degree).

Submitted by jwilson07 (not verified) on Mon, 25/08/2008 - 07:50.I began my adult life at 19, leaving my parents house with one bed, and a chest of drawers, total worth was around 19 bucks for the two items. I had purchased my own car with my own money, no hand outs from my parents. I went to work, showed up each day sober and awake, and moved up. i lived through lay offs and slow downs, changed careers three times, yet managed to pay the bills each time. Why? How could this be? Oh yes, i did not snivel and whine, I WENT TO FUCKING WORK THANKYOU. Perhaps the "poor" could try that instead of taking drugs and drinking all night long. Need medical insurance? Go to work you lazy pricks. Need medical help, PAY FOR IT. Stop sniveling and wanting hand out after handout. Just because you work
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Sat, 13/09/2008 - 10:05.Just because you work doesn't mean you get insurance. Under federal and several state legislations, you are not required to offer insurance to employees if you have less than 30 employees. Secondly, you have underwriting on some contracts. If you have any illness or have had a history of some illnesses, you may have a very high premium or even the insurance company will refuse to insure you. Try having asthma and try to get insured after you a diagnosed. Now to be fair, not all plans are up for underwriting. The employer can buy a contract and decide that they do not want underwriting for his group. This is becoming less and less common. It costs the employer more. You say you have insurance, but what happens when your company changes insurance companies? Well, you could be screwed. You might be underwritten again if your benefits administrator doesn't ask the employer have a waiver for underwriting. I've seen it a dozen times. There used to be a law against pre-existing conditions. Well several conditions are preexisting today. For example, let's say you change contracts. Your company says they want to switch from Humana to United Healthcare. They are switching companies and contracts. If you have a preexisting condition such as asthma (common enough illness), then any conditions related to asthma isn't covered for a complete calendar year. So if your child has asthma and has an attack that requires an emergency room visit with a hospital stay following, you will have to pay. So don't talk about having insurance. you have insurance as long as your employer provides insurance and wants to pay for it. Employers aren't required to pay for your insurance. Benefits are a perk of working for a company. THey have to offer a plan if they are a large group, they don't have to pay for it. So just working doesn't give you insurance. Only someone who lives in a microcosm would say something so terribly idiotic. You wanna know how I know this. I worked for the evil empire and I am developping markets overseas. So go ahead, have your false sense of security. The same poverty that you mock so much, could come knocking at your door so easily.

...and on a similar note
Submitted by Andrew (not verified) on Tue, 26/08/2008 - 00:50.I am a conservative(not Republican) for this very reason. This is the wealthiest country in the world and we have countless opportunities to advance. Meanwhile, we have millions on welfare who complain every day about living conditions, the amount of food stamps they receive, and the cost of raising their children. While there may be a few people with genuine situations prohibiting them from working, the majority of our "poor" are able bodied and able to get their as out and get a job. Meanwhile the Democrats in Congress want to give amnesty to the illegals who have already come here and steal jobs from Americans...giving our "poor" all the more reason to complain for more welfare at a greater burden to taxpayers (which DOESN'T include the jobs held by illegals). I can't speak for every region (as states fund things to a certain extent), but if you look at the government housing in Florida...it's hard to distinguish them from nice apartments, complete with bright colored siding and plenty of nice-looking landscaping. Then there's me, who works 25-30 hours a week ON TOP OF full-time college courses(16 credits). Why should I work hard AND get myself into THOUSANDS of dollars in debt, when the government (when the Democrats take over) will be taxing the hell out of me!? I want to have a life where I don't have to live paycheck to paycheck, can travel, and be able to positively contribute to society. The US government and especially the Democrats think that hard work should not be rewarded. And about those immigrants...they are the hardest working people in our society!! They appreciate the opportunities available and understand the values of earning an honest day's paycheck. If only it were possible/ethical to ship our LAZY "poor" to third world countries so they can appreciate the opportunities available to them here in the US.
People here are complaining about the education system, but Florida was around 48th or 49th in the nation in the quality of our public schools (or maybe it was graduation rates)...and that's even with the bussing of students to create "racially balanced" schools. In fact the local newspaper published an article on how one family's children were being bussed 21 miles (34km) when there was a middle school just 5 miles away! What does the state decide to do? Let people vote on a class size amendment, which passes so that schools spend even less money on education because they have to spend billions on building new schools and classrooms.
