Marseille fans save up €28m to buy back Drogba

The website reads: "Impossible is not a word that exists for the Marseillais", "All together, we can do it" and "Didier we're telling you, you will return".

A Marseille football fan has set up an online piggy bank for the penniless club in the hope of saving up enough money to buy back Ivorian star player Didier Drogba. "Come back Didier" was only launched only a few days ago but has already attracted over 25,000 donors.

Currently a striker for Chelsea, Drogba only spent a year playing for the Olympique de Marseille team during the 2003 - 2004 season. But his absence is all too evident at the Vélodrome stadium, where supporters are hoping to put together €28m for his return.

However, even if they succeed in gathering together the enormous sum, don't expect to see Drogba appearing in OM's blue and white strip any time in the near future. After getting wind of the operation, club chairman Pape Diouf had to announce that the fans' plans would not be followed through. "I've got an idea of what Drogba earns, and I can assure you it's beyond the norm in France - and would be impossible for us to pay".

"A great gesture"

Richard Biddle works in IT in London. He's a lifelong supporter of Chelsea, who bought Didier Drogba for €37.5m in 2004.

As a Chelsea fan, I have to say that this whole Drogbathon thing has been met by mixed reactions. Some fans think this is desperate. Others, including me, see it as real support and a great gesture by the Marseille fans. Here in London, over there in Marseille, or anywhere in the world, real fans are very loyal and dedicated to their club; football is not just a business. It's admirable. I don't think it'll work though. And even if it does, I won't be able to follow Drogba. I don't watch the French league and I don't even know where you can watch it in London...

We might see more things like this. I'm part of a fan group that actually owns Ebbsfleet football club [My Football Club].

For £35 each [€44], the other fans and I have become owners of the club. The motto is "Own the club and pick the team". Amongst other things we select the players and the team, we choose how much the season ticket should cost and we choose how much the manager can spend. That's a very democratic club, the first of its kind."
