Buffon saves Italy from disgrace

Buffon-bon.jpg
World Champions Italy were saved from being eliminated from the Euro 2008 tournament thanks to a penalty save by Gianluigi Buffon. Italy, however, was left hanging after a 1-1 draw in a Group C match against Romania. After a goalless entertaining first half, Romanian striker Adrian Mutu gave his team the lead in the 55th minute only for Italy’s Christian Panucci to draw a minute later.

"It wasn't the best line-up"

Elena Franco sent us her thoughts after Italy's close save...

In the first half, we had a few goal occasions, and Toni's attempt to strike a goal in the first half was good in everyone's opinion.

On the road, what impressed me was that, while for the first goal people in the houses shouted and were possible to hear also from the road, this didn't happen for Panucci's goal, only a minute after Mutu's first Romania goal. It was like people decided to stop watching the match after the Mutu's goal. Many people think the line-up chosen wasn't the best one, with many players already tired and out of form."

"One of Romania's best matches in a long time"

Patrascu Valentin is our Romanian observer

A dramatic match. In my opinion this is one of the best matches romania has played in a long tine at a final tournament. Great play by Mutu , Contra , and Lobont from the Romanian squad but also great performance by Italy's De Rosi and Buffon. Even the score 1-1 is very good , not quite good for Italy but none the less a great match . Even though there weren`t many goals , the play was fantastic , all the players did their best. We could have even won the match , I feel sorry for Mutu for missing the penalty shot ... but he was still our team's best player. I'm looking forward to the match with Holland which will be decisive in our goal to reach the quarter-finals."

Italian Soccer team

I'm not surprised about the way of Italy played because the national team is declining
since the world cup of 1990 & today I can easily say that the Azzuri, the Italian national
team is NO LONGER a world power of Soccer even if they wan the world cup of 2006 still,
It doesn't mean they're good to compete with the best & I do believe that the Neitherlands are replacing Italy & France as the new arrivals to competes with the best
National teams in the world.
