The Euro 2008 championship has barely started and Switzerland is already cornered, and now a match against Turkey.
Fans in Switzerland still remember how the Swiss team beat Turkey during the World Cup qualifiers in 2005, and how the Turks and their coach Fatih Terim created an intolerable ambiance before and after the latest match in Istanbul, including the ugly brawl between the two sides which ensued in the tunnel on the way to the locker-room, drawing Turkish security guards into the fighting.

So the match this evening is crucial for both teams, since it will also be a chance for revenge. Frei being injured is making it difficult for coach Kuhn to compose his squad. The team is also lacking forwards, especially with Streller out of form. The solution: to let Yakin begin in the centre with Vonlanthen and Derdiyok (the tournament's youngest player). In any case Streller should be left out as he wasn't impressive enough in the match against the Czech Republic. Having said that, Kuhn must be regretting his decision to leave Lustrinelli out of the team, but at the same time one couldn't predict these last minute injuries. One thing is for sure: if we don't take risks this evening, we can bid the Euro good bye."
A kebab shop displays both colours before Switzerland - Turkey
This Wednesday Basel plays host to Switzerland - Turkey - a crucial game for both sides. Both lost their opening matches and Swiss fans in particular are hoping their vocal support will push Switzerland to a win. But there's plenty of Turkish citizens resident in Switzerland, even 3 members of the Swiss team have Turkish roots. So on a day like today, plenty of people in Basel will be feeling ties to both teams. My local kebab shop has done the diplomatic - and perhaps only - thing to do. They have put out both the Turkish and Swiss flags on display.Whoever wins this match will be more in control of their qualification - a loss is not the end of the world, but it does mean that team relies on other results in order to qualify. In that sense both the Turks and the Swiss know they are drinking in the last chance saloon, and so the atmosphere in the city is a bit nervous. The fans seem to be doing their best to dispel their apprehension with the Swiss drinking beer and chanting "Hopp Schweiz!" ("Go Switzerland!") When I turned the corner and finally found plenty of Turkish fans, they seemed to have brought the party to the city - with an enormous round Turkish flag they unveiled on Basel's Johanniterbrucke bridge.

The police are very present in town, as the matches between Switzerland and Turkey turned violent in the qualification process for the last world cup. But they seem to be sticking to a soft presence for the moment.
I feel sorry for both sides - as they both want so desperately to win. But if everyone qualified for the next round, this tournament would be a little bit predictable, and dare I say, boring?
A discreet but felt police presence
Mehmet Anik is our Observers in Turkey and he believes his team can win.
Today, we play against Switzerland, I think we will win today. Because this is the last chance to go to the quarterfinals.
The whole Turkey wants 3 points today. Turkey is still unhappy with the Portugal match.
We need our captain and our midfield dynamic Emre, the rumors says he injured. Our defenses players Servet Cetin and Gökhan Zan are also injured. Fatih Terim must some changes today.
If Portugal wins over Czech Republic, it will motivate Turkey. In Euro 2000, we beat the host country Belgium, in world cup 2002 we beat Korea and Japan. Turkey is good to win over host Countries.
Today I hope we will beat Switzerland, I know we can.
