Still, few would fancy Switzerland and Austria’s chances this time round. Neither were particularly impressive in pre-tournament displays, while pressure from the home crowd may actually prove to be a handicap rather than a motivating factor.
Exasperated by their team’s poor performance so far, some Austrian fans went so far as to plead for the squad’s withdrawal from the contest.
So what may the red-and-white fans hope for? Will Alpine bells and Tyrolean chanting give wings to the home sides?
Despite dark clouds looming, we can feel in the streets that something big is happening. Tension is rising too. Swiss flags are covering the walls, balconies and flower pots, but the Portuguese, who make up the largest minority in Geneva with 30,000 people, also make their presence felt. And that’s without counting the thousands who flew here.
Everyone knows that the Swiss team will not go far, but we still want to believe they can. After all, Denmark and Greece made it in the past! The game against the Czechs will be revealing.
After a mixed-feeling preparation (a draw against Argentina, a walloping at the hands of Germany and a small win against Slovenia and…Lichtenstein to get some confidence), it is very hard to judge such a beautiful and young team, who will play at home.
So I remain realistic, as we are far from being favourites. But in football everything is possible, we can dream! To be through to the quarter finals would be an achievement.

Submitted by Ger Purcell (not verified) on Tue, 10/06/2008 - 12:11.Austria are the lowest ranked (according to FIFA) team in the competition and it shows.....they may have a slight chance against Poland tomorrow but I think Klose and Co. will destroy them in the final group game. I'm hoping they do as it will help my fantasy football team immensely!!!
