Michel Gondry launches first "sweding" film contest

The French director Michel Gondry is about to release his new film "Be Kind Rewind"; a story of two friends who spend their time remaking famous films- called "sweding"- with the lowest possible budget. To celebrate its launch he's organised a "sweding" film competition in collaboration with Dailymotion.

Independance Day

Sébastien Chauvel, 26, is a graphic designer. His video has already been seen 57,000 times:

I chose Independence Day because it's a blockbuster and so it seemed funny to do a remake of it with so little dosh. I worked around the clock for five days to complete the film. I made almost all of it from pieces of cardboard and a blue background. I only used Premiere and After Effects [software] for the final montage. That seems quite complicated, but technically it's actually quite simple. For example, for the in-air battle scene I used the same shots of just one plane. I then duplicated them, modified the shot angles and changed the tape speed. The final result is a battle with loads of planes.

I took part in this competition because I'm a fan of Gondry. But I'm also really passionate about video editing. So, if there's an occasion to adapt to cinema, then why not."

Panic Room

Posted 10 March 2008 by Gregory Hoepffner and Axel Dallou

Gregory Hoepffner, 23, is a masters degree student in art and science:

I've been making this kind of parody just for fun for five or six years with my band. So when we heard about this competition, we got started. Our film is a scene-by-scene remake of the trailer for Panic Room. We did it all in five days and with five actors. I doubled all the characters and then digitally enhanced my voice on the computer. We were wondering how we would parody the different actors in the film. The simplest way we found was to print out their faces and make masks from them. That was a pretty cheap solution. We're hoping to win the comp."

How much did they pay for the music rights? Give us a break. This is no 'sweding', just pilfering.
