Ponant attack not the last on a cruise ship

The 1,300 mile Somali coastline is a no-man's land where piracy is a crime out of control. There is only one way to stop piracy in these waters. A multi-nation patrol devoted exclusively to monitoring these seas which is an international shipping route.

Further -- it is a terrible thought for those kidnapped -- ransom must not be made for the release of crew. The warlords, the so-called Somali Marines behind these hijackings, are making millions from ransom paid. It is a lucrative business.

Lastly, look at the transom of the Ponant. If the master of the vessel was really concerned about attacks by pirates, that long swim platform would have been sealed off and guards placed on the stern. A LAD,
Loud Acoustic Device, successfully used to ward off pirates during the attack on the Seabourne Spirit should have been installed. And we do not know where exactly the Ponant was steaming when attacked but my guess is that it was not following the recommendations of maritime authorities and far enough off the coastline to avoid the attack. The Ponant was every pirate's dream . . .

The attack on the Ponant will not be the last on a cruise ship.
