Linda and Jason:
I'm an ordinary postgraduate living in china. Jason I can tell you that the censorship exists, and none of us is happy with that. the question is that 1)the reviews didn't pass were not only from the supporters of Tibet. more people are criticizing the authorities as doing nothing to protect them from the rioters. and they didn't pass either. it's a long tradition for us to block info, which is not surprised by us at all. try to have a look at the huge amount of complains and curses about blocking and the "unison society" on any large forum, say, baidu, if you can read any chinese. no? then no need to shhh or something.
2)actually, I began to know the negative side of the western world, esp their hostalities to China, just AFTER I began to contact the outside world directly, thru some people and mainly internet. just talked to an italian interpreator and he said least in EU the notion of "evil communist china" prevails. does it mean something to you?
3)taiwan may be more free after 1980s, and it's admirable. but don't tell me that before that it was, let alone 60 years.
Linda, thanks to your words, though I don't think I know the us good enough to judge on its activities. they do have a hobby to mess with other countries affairs, but I dont consider the people are the same. my best friend is teaching chinese in MI and she's enjoying her time there much. I'm primarily not anti-american at all. hope what I see won't make me walk that direction.
