A skyscraper under construction in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou has become an online sensation. Dubbed the “Gate of the Orient”, the 301 metre (around 987 feet) tall building is unique, to say the least. Made up of two separate towers connected by an arched bridge, the structure looks, simply put, like a pair of legs attached to a rather flat bum. Tickled by its odd appearance, Chinese Internet users have nicknamed the skyscraper “the leggings building”.
Conceived by the international architectural firm, RMJM , the skyscraper is located in Suzhou’s Industrial Park. The building’s design was reportedly inspired by the ancient gate to the city – a homage to Chinese tradition with touches of Western influence. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2012, and is expected to house a hotel, department stores and business offices.
As builders put the final touches on the “Gate of the Orient”, its nearly finished form has already sent online imaginations running wild. Riffing on its leggy appearance, artsy Internet users have been busy uploading doctored images of the structure. The visuals range from lighting designer Liu Yang’s rendition of the skyscraper lit-up in a sexy pair of fishnet stockings and frilly underpants (by far one of the most-shared images) to a slightly less classy sketch of the “Gate” urinating.
