In this amateur video, a UN observer in Syria crawls on the ground, trying to shelter from gunfire. Then Syrians come to his rescue, pulling him to safety.
This video was filmed on May 15 in Khan Sheikhoun, a town in the northwestern province of Idlib. The UN observers were attending a funeral for a man who had been killed the previous day, when bullets suddenly started flying. According to local activists, the mourners were attacked by the Syrian army
. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights – an opposition group – says 20 people were killed.
The UN observers have been travelling throughout Syria since April 15 on a three-month-mission
. They are to report on the situation on the ground as part of the Annan plan
to end the conflict in Syria.
Since the beginning of the revolt in March 2011, at least 9,000 people have been killed, according to the United Nations. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights estimates that over 11,000 have been killed, most of them civilians.
