The Observers predicted a Spanish triumph

When answering a questionnaire before the competition, the Observers predicted Spain would win the Euro 2008. 60% of them named at least one finalist. History proved them right. Here are their comments before the opening game.

The winning ticket : "Germany and Spain in final, Spaniards to win"

Romain Bellefeuille, our French Observer was the only one to have predicted the perfect outcome. He comments his forecast.

Spain had shown the best brand of football over the past twelve months, as illustrated by their impressive win over France in Malaga (06/02/08).

When you can boast of a young and talented team, with a flawless defence, midfield and attack, it all ends up paying.

As for Germany, they’re always in for a shot at the title. Having finished third at the World Cup and with a young team, they were always going to rank among the favourites for the Euro.

Indeed, young teams went furthest in this competition, as was the case with the semi-finalists (Germany, Turkey, Spain and Russia).

"I am going to go for Spain"

Chris Bully, amateur referee and British Observer gave Spain winner.

I fancy Spain to just squeeze past France in a semi final and meet Croatia in the final, who have some very technically gifted players and an excellent young coach in Slaven Bilic.

I am going to go for Spain to end their years of under-achievement and win the tournament with as dangerous a front two as any in the Championships with Torres and David Villa, and their midfield driven by the excellent Cesc Fabregas and Xavi.

"Spain will win this"

Writing from Poland, Marcin Smietana was sure Spain would shine in the final of Euro 2008.saw Spain the clear winner.

As irrational as this may seem, I fancy Poland’s chances to reach the semis. Of course, one would expect to see at least one of the organisers in the semi-finals, but I don’t think this will happen. I’m expecting to see Croatia do well; they’re a solid team, who could well meet Spain in the final. We can’t discard Italy, who are always in for a shot at the title, even when the style of play is lacking.

But Spain will end up winning. Why? Because it’s time to break the spell and finally clinch a trophy. I say Spain will beat Croatia in extra time.

“I’m counting on Spain to lift the cup”

Our Polish Observer, Andrzej Leo had placed all hopes in the Red Furies.

Spaniards always say: ‘we play like never before, but lose as always!’ Still, I’m sure Torres & co will do a great, great Euro!

I’m telling you, it’ll be spectacular, and I’m counting on them to lift the cup!
