Portugal go through, Switzerland are out

Mission accomplished for Portugal who won their ticket to the quarter finals by beating the Czech Republic, 3-1. The Swiss, who desperatly needed to win against the Turks, eventually lost in extra time after an animated game disrupted by torrential rain.

'Arda Turan, true Man of the Match'

Mehmet Anik is our Turkish Observer living in Denmark.

At the final whistle, all Turkey became crazy, including me. The streets of Taksim in Turkey were crowded with people holding flags. In Switzerland as well they were mad!

What a relief when Arda Turan, our Turkish Iniesta, scored the second goal!

The Euro really started today for the Turks, and our next match against the Czech Republic will be an exciting match, because both teams have the same goal difference and points.

But the the real man of the match was Arda Turan. He played very well and concluded with a brilliant goal!"

Some Turkish supporter celebrate after Arda Turan's goal.

"Progress on the Czech side is noticeable"

The Czechs won their first game 1-0, but were heavily criticized. In the next game, against Portugal, they lost 1-3, but their fans are grateful and happy. “This time, they really tried,” – they say.

Ivan Hašek, a retired forward for the Czech National team, and now a coach of El Ahly club in Dubai, gives this opinion.

Compared to the first game against Switzerland, the improvements were obvious. We were more active, more dangerous. Unfortunately, Portugal have outstanding players such as Ronaldo and Deco, and they won. We played well as a team, everybody worked well both in defense and attack, but Deco scored a goal and gave two goal passes, Ronaldo scored as well. These two players determined the outcome of the game.

We made some mistakes – for example, we left opponents alone before they scored the first goal. We didn’t use all our chances in attack.

We played all-out attack at the end of the game, and conceded a third goal, which is a shame, because we could have tied the game. We made mistakes, but the Portuguese were better in any case. Our players do not have such individual skill as the Portuguese.

But I believe we will make it to the play-offs together with Portugal. Now the most important thing is to get ready for the game with Turkey. You can see that the game of the Czech team is improving. The guys want to win.

I think that we will play from defense, which is our strong point, and that in the next game the team will be at its best.

'You could hear the church bells celebrating'

Patricia Silva is our Portuguese Observer.

As expected, yesterday's match was a lot harder. Deco's goal almost didn't happen and a few minutes later the Czechs tied it up. You could easily see the disappointment in people's faces and after the first 45 minutes people started to leave. But the match wasn't over yet, a lot could happen, and would a draw really be that bad? I was pretty sure we would get to the quarter finals even then.

The second goal brought smiles to the crowd, but the Czechs were playing well and a third goal was needed. And then it happened, the confirmation goal, you could hear the church bells celebrating along with all the people in the nearest cafés. Uefa named Ronaldo the MVP of the match, but I do think Deco had a great performance as well.

Anyway, our part was done, we just had to wait for the results of Switzerland - Turkey, and a Swiss victory would not be good for Portugal. But Turkey played better than when they played us and won, and with that we're in the quarters.

Next up are Switzerland on Sunday, which we don't have to win, and Switzerland will surely give their best as they're out of the competition already, but they want to leave with their heads up. But a positive score for us will be great for the players’ self-esteem and confidence within the group.

Let's just hope the news about Scolari leaving to coach Chelsea after the Euro doesn't upset what has been done so far and what's left to do, people are a bit revolted with that, and myself as well, it should have been made public after the Euro. Still everyone will keep supporting the team, and come to think of it, we only need to win two more matches to be in the final, got to keep hoping!

'It's over'

Switzerland has woken up to find its hopes of doing anything in the Euro 2008 championship in tatters. The country knew the odds were stacked against them walking out winners, but after Hakan Yakin scored first last night, Swiss fans all around me started doing maths. A win against Turkey, then a game against Portugal who might put up less resistance as they'd already qualified - a lot of crazy hatted fans were already in a half Swiss quarter final - and who knows, eventual winners?

We headed into the city to watch the match on a big screen, but as we changed tram we caught the first goal on the tv screen at a burger bar. 20 people, including policemen and crowd control assistants were glued to the screen. We were just 5km from the stadium, where no rain fell even though inside St Jakobs Park the players were under so much water they had difficulty standing up straight. "I can really feel this" said one fan, "They're playing their hearts out despite the rain". But this was just a "crazy dream" according to Swiss newspaper Le Temps. Despite the fact that there is still one match to play, it's over, say the papers - Le Matin pointing out that all hope has "been definitively buried."

But though the disappointment is bitter, Le Temps is quite straight-talking with its readers - the team "did not rank amongst the 8 best in Europe." Though all the fans I met last night would disagree, there is not really a huge chance that Switzerland will get through to the quarter finals now.
