Torrential flooding has killed at least two people in the southern French province of Var, one of whom was reportedly swept away by floodwaters in his car. The coastal towns of Hyeres and La Londe-les-Maures have been devastated by the downpours, which have been battering the region since Friday. Photos and videos posted on social media websites reveal the full extent of the damage.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault promised an "immense effort" to rebuild during a visit to the worst-affected areas on Monday. More than 1,500 people were ordered to evacuate on Sunday, with 600 forced to wait out the storm in temporary shelters. Rescue services have been using up to ten helicopters in an effort to evacuate people still stranded in their homes, hundreds of which are without electricity.
