Iran unveils machine for amputating thieves’ fingers

One of Iran’s official press agencies published photos showing the public amputation of a thief's fingers on Wednesday. These show a man getting his finger chopped off with a machine resembling a rotary saw.

WARNING: These images may shock viewers.

We contacted many of our Observers in Iran to ask them about this machine. Some of them had heard about it before, but many discovered its existence through these morbid photographs, which were reportedly taken on Thursday. According to the INSA press agency, the man shown getting his finger cut off was charged with robbery and adultery by a court in the southwestern city of Shiraz. He was also accused of being at the head of a criminal organisation. On top of losing his fingers on one hand, he was sentenced to three years in prison and 99 whip lashes.

No independent witnesses were able to recount the circumstances under which this amputation took place. Four photos of the scene published by the press agency were widely relayed on social media networks. Strangely enough, the man’s face did not betray any signs of suffering in the photos, though it is possible that he might have been drugged.

"Publishing these photos is a way to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests"

Contacted by FRANCE 24, the spokesperson for Iran Human Rights, Mahmoud Amiry-Moghaddam, who is based in Norway, explains: “What is surprising about this is that not only was this a public amputation, but that photos of it were distributed by official press agencies, and that they showed a machine that we had until yet never seen images of. We have noticed that the authorities have recently being making more and more publicity surrounding cases of corporal punishment. Every time we get closer to an election, the number of these incidents increases. And we’re getting quite close to the presidential election [slated for June]. I believe this is a strategy to instil fear in the population so as to avoid any protests.

Following the amputation, Ali Alghasi, Shiraz’s public prosecutor, announced that sentences against criminals would become increasingly severe, without explaining why.

On January 20, two thieves were hanged in public in Tehran. They had been caught thanks to video filmed by a street surveillance camera that showed them robbing a man at knifepoint. They had stolen the equivalent of 20 euros.

Amputation, whipping, and even death by stoning are all legal forms of punishment under Iran’s Islamic penal code.

I've been browsing on-line more than 3 hours nowadays, yet I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It's
beautiful value enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made excellent content as
you probably did, the internet will be much more helpful than
ever before.

I got this web site from my buddy who informed me regarding this site and now this time I am browsing this web site and reading very informative articles or reviews at
this time.

Amputating fingers

I just noticed--one of the Iranians is pointing at the little device with the red handle, with a finger-sized hole in the middle. So the finger chopper is almost certainly not the big "saw."

I bet he doesn't steal again.

I bet he doesn't steal again. We'd have a lot of amputees in the U.S. if this was implemented here, or a lot less thefts after the criminals realized we meant business. After all, it's kinda hard to be a repeat offender after your second conviction.

iran finger amputation

Does the comment that the US should implement such a system, include children? Are kids subject to Sharia in Iran? There is little to segregate children from adults in Islam. Will a hungry kid lose hands or fingers for stealing bread, or a donut? Should they?
Is there anyone on the face of the planet who can claim, with a strait face and clear conscience, that they have not at one time or another, been guilty of "finger chopping"crimes, according to Sharia law?
How can judges who refuse to recognize or prosecute sex crimes against women, ever be trusted to be fair in crimes of petty theft?
Would you trust your child to a Sharia court ? Would you allow your daughter to be held by male Islamic thugs?

Amputating fingers

It looks like the actual amputating device is the little gadget on the left of the table with the red handle. Are there any pictures of an actual amputation where the accursed criminal is not showing pain? It looks to me like the rest of the machinery is only in the picture to make the process look more horrifying. The hole in the little machine seems just the right size to hold a finger. I guess it's a toss-up whether it's better to have a finger chopped off or to spend years locked up with sadistic, sexually deprived men. They don't use anesthetics, either!

Jail Time

If you read the article more closely, you will see he was sentenced to three years, in addition to the amputation. So, no digits AND sadistic, sexually deprived men.

how are these photos
