Two Western journalists were killed in Syria’s restive city of Homs on Wednesday after government forces shelled a press centre cobbled together by opposition activists in the neighbourhood of Baba Amr. Our Observer, Khaled Abu Salah, who was there when the attack took place, immediately picked up his camera to record the aftermath.
Given the violent nature of the images, FRANCE 24 has decided not to show the footage [click here
to see video on YouTube]. Below is a translation of Salah’s description of the events, as heard in the video:
“These are the bodies of American journalist Marie Colvin and French journalist Remi Ochlik. Three other journalists have been injured, including one from [the French daily newspaper] Le Figaro, who is in critical condition [in the video, the Le Figaro journalist is seen with a wounded leg].
This journalist worked for the Sunday Times, and what you see is the debris from the bombardment. The shelling continues. Everyone needs to help us care for the wounded and save those who are still alive in Baba Amr. This message is addressed to the European Union – your blood now runs with the blood of Syrians, you should act immediately to stop [Syrian President] Assad’s gangs”.
