First-ever video proof documenting murder of suspected Gbagbo militants

FRANCE 24’s Observers Team has been able to obtain and verify video documenting the brutal murder of three suspected militants loyal to former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo in Abobo, a suburb just outside of the main city of Abidjan. The footage constitutes the first authenticated images of an act of violence against suspected Gbagbo supporters during last year’s post-electoral conflict.

An estimated 3,000 people were killed in the clashes that followed Ivory Coast’s disputed 2010 presidential elections between Gbagbo and now-President Alassane Ouattara.

FRANCE 24 was able to collect a number of witness statements from bystanders who saw the killing in Abobo. Here are some of the highlights of what they saw.

In the footage FRANCE 24 obtained, the three men seen in the video attempted to leave Abobo by taxi, but were arrested at a checkpoint. It appears those who discovered the fleeing men also found a notebook in their possession which contained photos depicting the three dressed in pro-Gbagbo paraphernalia.

Once the notebook was discovered, the events that followed unfolded very quickly. The trio were first undressed and forced to sit on the pavement. In one of the videos, one hears the crowd accusing them of being militants. The three young men begged to be released.

The suspected militants were beaten, and then burnt in a pile of tyres. According to eyewitnesses, the three men were already dead by the time their bodies were doused with petrol.

The video was shot in early March 2011 near the local police station in the heart of Abobo. The northern suburb served as the central stage of nearly two-months of clashes between Gbagbo supporters and the “invisible commando”, an armed group that supported Ouattara.

The incident took place just after the suburb of Abobo came under the control of the Ouattara’s invisible commando. The majority of Gbagbo’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) had already fled the area. Locals had put barricades in place to more easily control traffic in and out of Abobo, as well as to prevent Gbagbo’s remaining supporters from escaping the suburb. Vehicles leaving the area were meticulously searched.

Our sources in Abobo confirmed that this was not the only mob killing of its kind to take place in their suburb during this period. According to the NGO Human Rights Watch, once forces loyal to Ouattara seized control of Abidjan, several executions and acts of torture were committed against individuals suspected of supporting Gbagbo. Up until now, no one has been unable to verify a single image related to these alleged abuses.

FRANCE 24’s Observers Website has already documented similar acts of violence allegedly perpetrated by Gbagbo’s armed forces against suspected Ouattara supporters.

Gbagbo, who was arrested on April 11, currently faces charges of crimes against humanity over his role in the post-election violence at the International Criminal Court in The Hague.

Real talk!!!

How did Ouattara's rebelles took over the northern ivory coast?
Think about that previous question please...
No one can tell me that they took the north without KILLING some INNOCENT persons and nobody is talking about, because

they want Ouattara to protect their colianialist interests...

but all of them should face the LAW, not Gbagbo only...

Show the real video if you have it

I have to agree with the other person who posted. If you have a real video to back up your assertion, then show it. Don't expect your readers to believe you, just because you spoke with some "sources". Pro-tyrant supporters of the Gbagbo know how to splice a video together from different source videos. It may be Africa, but imagine, propagandists actually can go that far. Again, if you have a real video, show it. Splicing images together from various sources only makes France24 look like an amateur operation.

You are all ignorant

Come to Cote d'ivoire and i will also show you all videos of Gbagbo's militant killing innocent people.
I know Alassane's militants also killed but not as much as that of Gbagbo.
Alassane never ordered anyone to kill. He kept on urgeing Gbagbo to cede the power he is claiming to have won fraudelenty back to him peacefully and nothing would happen to him, he will go scot free, and everyone bear that with me. But bcos of his greedyness he sticked to it and that caused lot of lives. He is to be blame not Alassane so i am urgeing you all to first blame Gbagbo before blaming Alassane and i repeat if you want to nail Alassane to the cross find good points. Thank you!!!!

This video has been edited. It isn't real.

This video has been edited. It isn't real. From what i have noticed in the video although it might be true that the begining of the video showed that three men were captured and been questioned by Ouattara millitant if they were from Gbagbo's party ( LMP). The fact that the video later paused and began showing images and then another video of three people been burnt alive makes the meaning of the video fake.
Ask yourself in the first place why would the video pause while they were been questioned then straight away they start to show pictures, then quickly to show three people been burnt alive. I will never believe this and i know you whites cant also take such lies agains yourself, lets be frank for God sake. Do you know the people Gbagbo partisant also killed? Do you know the number of families they distroyed? When Gbagbo was in power how people were maltreated just because they are foreigners? Even french nationals were also killed and you still seat down there and take such foolish video from their partisant and post it here. Are you serious at all? Gbagbo while in power his wife Simeon killed the franco-Canadian journalist while trying to know more about the corrupt Cocoa business in the country.
Gbagbo did nothing for the country during his 10yrs of reign, he only delayed the country. Alassane in his few days have done more than gbagbo did in 10yrs. Alassane is the best and God choosen, so if you want to nail him to the cross fine good points other than lies.
The video showing up here is been edited making it fake no comment on that. You whites of france24 knows better and you shouldnt take such lies unless you are been bias to the reign of Alassane Outtara.
I love all Ivorians and Cote d'ivoire my country.

Next time we will get

Next time we will get Spielberg to film it for you?

nonsense, ADO is just as

nonsense, ADO is just as guilty as Gbagbo

I dnt argue with empty cans like you.

I guess you dont know what you are talking about.
People like you needed to be present when the crisis was going on.
Had it been that you lost some of your families when Gbagbo's wife ordered that they killed 7 women matching at Abobo in January you wouldnt have been talking like this.
i repeat if you want to nail Alassane to the cross find good points and reasons bitch.

Video footage

Thank you for your response regarding this video. I am learning what I can about the region as American news does not cover it well...or at all. From foreign news reports that I read, the level of violence in the African countries is staggering and the corruption seems almost complete across the entire continent. That being said, I thought this video to be staged and edited as well. It seems that although I can believe the violence, the fact that it is so one sided about the issues of that region make it suspect. Good journalism requires an unbiased look from both sides so that the readers can make an informed choice. This video was just a way to broadcast sensationalism so that people's first reaction would be horror towards the situation without really knowing the whole situation.

Not all whites believe everything they read or see. Some of us dig a little deeper.

God Bless

Please be objective

i would like to tell you that many of such things happened in Cote D'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), but we saw and we will see only those that some people want us to see.
Ouattara militaries are murders like some of Gbagbo's owns.

Gbagbo is to be blaim the most

I support you if you say both side killed but i want you to know that Gbagbo is to be blame much.
