When US football mascots go bad
At American college football games it’s not just the football players who do the tackling, but also the two opposing teams’ mascots. Videos of scuffles are huge online hits. However, are these fights staged, or is the violence real?
Last week, Rufus the Bobcat of Ohio University took a swing at Brutus Buckeye of Ohio State. The "Bobcat" pursued his adversary across the field, brutally punching him several times. The video of the attack appeared on ESPN (sports network) and was seen by thousands on the Internet. Ohio University has since apologised to its opponent and banned Brandon Hanning (Rufus the mascot) from any further affiliation with the school... even though Hanning was not even a student. The young man of 19 acknowledged that he had planned the attack on Brutus Buckeye all along.

We set up the "Seymour versus Big Al" fight for the fans. I was very friendly with the person playing the mascot from the University of Alabama. We wanted to do a wrestling-style face-off, to liven up the crowd. Everything was planned and we did not actually hit each other. These fights are organised like sketches and they are well-loved by the fans. At the same time, they do not happen very often because of the unspoken rules in the world of mascots.
Mascots have an ethical code and rules to follow: do not speak, stay in character, no vulgar or inappropriate gestures. Occasionally the rules of conduct vary from one team to another. Some teams, for example, do not allow the opposing mascot to leave a predetermined zone; others do not allow any interaction between the mascots. Fights are completely prohibited.
But the pressure to represent one’s school is great, and some think violence is the only way to show dominance. In the Ohio University-Ohio State case, since the attack was not planned, if something serious had happened during the fight, charges could have been brought.
Mascot fights are fairly rare, because you have to remember that these mascots are the icons of the teams they represent. They not only appear at sporting events - they also give seminars on the importance of education in schools, and visit retirement homes and hospitals to bring some cheer to people who cannot attend games. "
