A relatively unknown hunting practice has started to tarnish the reputation of the Iberian Peninsula. Each year, thousands of "galgos" - the name given to the greyhounds used by Spanish hunters - suffer an agonising death for not bringing back enough game.
Whilst in France a campaign has recently been launched against abandoning pets, intended to coincide with the beginning of the holidays, in Spain the number of victims of the last hunting season is being counted. It is difficult to obtain precise figures but it is estimated that around 20,000 galgos are killed in atrocious conditions every year.
Spain is the only country in the European Union which has not banned "hunting with greyhounds", a type of hunting which involves the dogs killing game for their masters. In the rest of Europe, hunting dogs are only used for chasing the game out of the undergrowth, into the path of the hunters.
At the end of every hunting season, the Spanish hunters, called "galgueros", get rid of the dogs which did not bring back any game. This ritual is meant to "restore the honour" of the hunter, who "punishes" his dog for its poor performance.
To do this, the galgueros do their utmost to torture their dogs, subjecting them to slow hanging, immolation, asphyxiation, poisoning...These customs are condemned by animal protection associations, which are trying to find sanctuaries for greyhounds abroad until such practices are banned in Spain.
Mo Swatek is a Swiss national, living in Spain between Tarragona and Barcelona. She is the founder of the Pro-Galgo association.

We have great difficulty fighting against these practices and the victimisation of the galgos for two reasons. Firstly, the authorities are very lax when it comes to this subject. If you want to denounce the murder or torture of an animal, the local police will not lift a finger, if you want a reaction you have to call the Guardia Civil (national guard). As for bringing the matter before a court, that's an entirely different ball game. Secondly, many Spanish politicians are amateur hunters and do not want to be deprived of their pleasure.
Our association is based in Catalonia, a region that is pro-European and known for having quite progressive views on various subjects. [The Catalan Parliament is well on the way to passing a law banning bullfighting].
So if we struggle to stop these practices here, imagine what it must be like in the southern regions where hunting is widely practised! In these regions, the hunters are often influential people and people dare not denounce a neighbour for torturing his dog for fear of being attacked or having their house burnt down! This is not an exaggeration.
To put a stop to these cruel acts, the European Union must decide to impose an outright ban on hunting with greyhounds, with no exceptions. No doubt the law will see a lot of dogs abandoned, but surely that's better than torture?
At the same time, the authorities need to take the time to ensure that individual hunters are meeting the sanitation requirements. When we established our animal sanctuary, we had to deal with an enormous number of formalities: application forms, paperwork, sanitation regulations etc. The galgueros do not have to comply with any of these demands. Such a system is necessary to bring an end to the agony of the Spanish greyhounds."

Galgo's
Submitted by Joke Brussen (not verified) on Sun, 18/07/2010 - 12:13.Since 2003 I am the proud owner of galga's. I have by now five of them. They are my lovely girls. Every day I am suprised by there joy and thankfullnes towards me.
I can't en will not understand those beast of galgueros whom tread those lovely dogs less than garbage. Every one of my girls has an horrific story beeing shot at, dumped after eight years used as a breeding factory now walking with painkillers thanks to the treatment of a bastard whom calls himself a man! It's common work to beat the breeding female on her back, kick the kneecaps in. Thats how she stays with the puppies!
One of them has a tattoo in her ear. Missing a kidney car accident healed by it self. Before she was captived has two litters the last one survived never came close to the shelter in La Linea but thanks to Peters kind patience she is saved after a year and came a month ago to my house in Holland.
As a volunteer for three organisations I know what's going on in Spain I read everything, it gives me the drive to go on for those beautiful dogs.
Spanish Hounds
Submitted by Ted (not verified) on Sat, 17/07/2010 - 18:07.I rehomed a Podencos female from Pro-Galgo Spain in April 2009. Although she had been a breeding bitch for a Spanish Hunter she was still dumped after giving him around 8 litters of pups. She was found and rescued by Mo's Pro-Galgo Rescue, where she had to stay for 7 months for her Rabies Pet Passport being valid for entry into 7 months. Menta as she has been called, Spanish for Mint, is a White Wired Haired Podencos Andulez Grande. When she came to me she was very timid, she is still very nervous of sudden movements such as raising your hand suddenly, she makes sure she is out of your way if you need to pass the place she has settled down in. She loves my two large Greyhounds and she is now nearly their size and weight. She follows me very closely when we are out walking but these days barks in greeting to other people and dogs.
Compared with the Greyhounds I doubt if she will ever forget the bad treatment she had in spain treated not as a pet but just as a commodity to be got rid of by the nastiest way possible.
galgos
Submitted by polly (not verified) on Sat, 17/07/2010 - 09:22.this is barbaric, we all know this yet our government does nothing. They could easily put pressue on spain through the EU.
If our government is as much use as a chocolate teapot it doesn't mean we have to be the same. Please stop going to spain on holiday, go elsewhere as it's only when their tourist industry is hit, and hit hard, that spain will begin to listen.
Boycott spanish holidays please
This Must Stop Now!
Submitted by Valarie (not verified) on Fri, 16/07/2010 - 19:01.This shows that the hunters are barbaric cowards and MUST be STOPPED from torturing these innocents!
Whats all this rubbish that
Submitted by Galgo lover (not verified) on Fri, 16/07/2010 - 20:09.Whats all this rubbish that the spaniash culture is warm and the english culture is cold. The spanish enjoy sadisitic rituals where they torture their animals for entertainment whilst they laugh and applaud the cowards who do it. There is nothing warm about this culture. The hanging of greyhounds is sick. Shame on Spain the country where barbaric torture remains legal and applauded! SICK SICK SICK!
Disgusting! Intolerable!
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Fri, 16/07/2010 - 18:09.Disgusting! Intolerable! You might think differently if the roles were reversed.
Oh, but I forgot. This is a country where men are admired for running around a stadium in colourful tight fitting pants, slowly killing an already drugged up and wounded animal. Yes. Very impressive. What skill. What bravery. What a joke.
Spanish hunters worse than animals.
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Fri, 16/07/2010 - 16:20.This report makes one wonder if the Spanish hunters are worse than animals, when they choose to so badly abuse their dogs.
Spanish hunters worse than animals
Submitted by Beryl Brennan (not verified) on Fri, 16/07/2010 - 19:31.This heading is a blight on animals. The plight of the galgos and the annual massacre by the hunters and galgo racing people is a disgrace to a nation which considers itself 'a civilised Western country'. The abuse of these dogs, year in, year out, treated like vermin when they are really affecionate, loving and loyal companions, is sickening. And to make it worse the national, regional, provincial and municipal governments, judges, police, etc are nearly all corrupt, most of them are hunters too and perpetrate the horrors inflicted on these dogs. They are a blight to a country where the majority of people welcome tourists to view their historic buildings, works of art etc.
I have just published a book about the plight of the galgo - 'From Heaven to Hell - the Story of the Galgo Espanol' which can be purchased via my website http://www.galgonews.com. I hope my book will explain to the world about the plight of the galgos and expose the people who are in a position to take action, and turn their backs. I curse them all.
