Anti-government "Red Shirt" protestors in the provincial capital of Ubon Ratchathani have burnt the City Hall, which soldiers were guarding, to the ground. Our Observer there has just sent us these photos.
MeMock is an expat who runs a café three blocks away from the building. He took these photos on his iPhone.
Memock says that the protestors also set fire to this fire engine as it was on its way to the scene.
Along with the province of Ubon Ratchathani (its capital is of the same name), 21 other provinces (out of the country's 76) have been placed under a state of emergency. Most of them are in the northeast of the country, the heartland of the Red Shirts.

Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Thu, 20/05/2010 - 07:16.The Royalists supporting the government in Thailand must be very happy, the more they kill and the more they put in jail, means lesser people will vote against them in the next elections.
who cares! they are only poor thais people.

Thailand
Submitted by TrueTha (not verified) on Thu, 20/05/2010 - 02:56.Who cares!!???? EVERYONE Cares!! If no one cared, the thousands of protesters would have been killed 2 months ago! All Thais, rich or poor Care for Thais, but it seems You do NOT care!
You should get for facts right. snipers killed unarmed people? You mean unarmed people who throw bombs, killed soldiers and burn Thailand??
Stop pity yourself and blame on others!
if you are poor, you will
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Thu, 20/05/2010 - 03:46.if you are poor, you will know why they need to behave like that. it's long long long times, Govt has never cared about thai ppl, but they do care about the royal family. the govt a big amount of money to the royal family, birthday celebrations, aniversary wedding party, sell bank note of king and queen, and order all govt officials to buy them. for what? the govt wants to serve for king, and then they will receive some power from royal family.
What's about poor ppl? never been received any budget from govt, street, road, social welfare, transportations...all of these are still bad...because all tax income, they serve for the royal family.
now, i would like to ask you back, poor ppl have not got any right to call for democracy???? if the answer is yes...we will continue to fight for democracy in our ways.
The fact is that what the
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Thu, 20/05/2010 - 13:01.The fact is that what the red-shirt is not the right according to the constitution and they were dragged by the red-shirt leaders and Mr Thaksin to make use of them. In the current situation, I'm very sure that either the rich, middle class or the "majority" of the poor still need the monarch as the symbol of the country. If they come out to protest about this issues, they shouldn't claim the democracy. They should come out to ask for voting or consensus of people' opinion whether we still want the monarchy.
btw, we have the rule that whoever was born in Thailand has to accept is that people can't criticise the royal family (This rule people agree with this for over 100 years). It means that the goal of this demonstration (according to your comment ) is to dissolve the monarchy. Thus, this demonstration is illegal. Even the protest leader always refused about this issue.
The problem about the class is another issue we need to solve but not by violent demonstration. I think you've already seen this from the results that they burned other's private and public properties. It's obvious that some of protesters are armed and unarmed protesters allow the them to use the occupied area for violence. Although some unarmed died and they shouldn't get dead-sentence, it's unavoidable to let it happen due to the fact that the government attempted to ask them out from the area. If this demonstration was truly peaceful, they should arrest the armed people and send to polices, and the leader shouldn't provoke the followers for violence. We have lots of evidences, i.e. video, audio, proving that they did.
Mr. Thaksin makes use of the social weakness to misinform people to bring them here with his promise to make them richer. I don't believe that he can do this for all 70% of 65 million people who are poor.
I didn't say the poor have not right for demonstration, but it shouldn't be the way in which it happened.
What will your answer...
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Sun, 23/05/2010 - 09:15.Wow, what i have seen so far from the anti-red is that Red are violent, Thaksin is behind the play, the red are anti-royalist....blablabla....Pls allow me to ask you some questions:
1. Why the red protested?
2. How long does it take to solve this social class division?
3. Why is military solution is the best choice for cracking down the red, but why not the riot police, using water cannon, tear gass...to disperse them like any other democratic countries?
4. What is the evidence that Thaksin is the mastermind of the protest?
5. Did the red undertook violences happened before or after the military carried out against them?
6. Govt claim that there were terrorist snipers, but how can those snipers get access to the buildings while they were under controll of the govt military?
7. In the last class, 54 civilian people were killed, and no military died, what are you going to explain this?
What would you do if your voice is not listened to, your dignity and right sas a citizen of a nation is not treated equally, but like a Buffalo?
8. What do you think about this govt to deal with the Yellow who blocked airports, govt buildings and even resort to violence and they are still walking free?
9. What do you feel if you were a protesters and saw your fellow protesters shot dead in front of your face? Do you think all people are able to control their anger?
I have more questions, but i just want to awake you with these only?

People who set fire to public properties could face terrorism charges, and security forces are now allowed to use live ammunition to end the widespread turbulence in the country immediately, Department of Special Investigations director-general Tharit Pengdit said on Wednesday.
The government's Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) has warned that people who are guilty of terrorism charges could face a possible death penalty.
"Security forces have been allowed to use firearm to prevent terrorist acts, and the government would like to warn the ill-intentioned people to stop creating unrest," Mr Tharit said.
He said people who attempted to obstruct authorities from performing their duty could also face a maximum penalty.
"There are groups of people who are burning state offices and public places. The DSI would like to warn these people that they could face a death sentence," the DSI chief warned.
Metropolitan Police deputy speaker Songpol Wattanachai said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjaijva had ordered the police to set up checkpoints in different areas and use absolute measures to prevent terrorist acts and protect people's lives and properties.
He said the police had prepared cars to transport people back to their residences.
just this PM can do
Submitted by Unregistered user (not verified) on Thu, 20/05/2010 - 03:57.it's quite obvious that it's just this that the PM can do? Thai PM use army and armoured cars to disperse mobs. Is this a good idea? Although , all red shirt protesters are poor, but they are human like Mr.Abhisit is. So, why he needs to kill them, just because they got different thought from him. There are unfairs in thailand. PM got back up from King and thai army, but the poor ppl, they got back up from Mr.Taksin, the person who is now PM tried his best to say, he is not Thai. But, it's him to give a financial support for poor ppl. He never left thai poor ppl, but King did. Now, he didnt care any thing how many thai ppl died, as he wants just he and his royal family can stay on the throne and have a black power beyond thai ppl forever. Just this your want king??????
that's why...just this PM, Mr.Abhisit can do for all thai ppl. Serve money for King...that's all.
