Morocco’s gays come out of the shadows

Going against the advice of the authorities, a Moroccan association is organising a conference on homosexuality in Marrakesh.

Moroccan society might be on the move, but the government is finding it hard to follow. In February a French feminist NGO called Ni Putes Ni Soumises (Neither Whores Nor Submissive) was banned from setting up a branch in the country, causing outrage amongst activists. Today, it's a homosexual association that's in trouble. Members of "Kifkif" (which literally means "same same" in both Arabic and in French slang), are attempting to get homosexuality recognised in Moroccan society. The organisation, based in Spain, is planning a conference in Marrakesh on April 15. In response, the minister of the interior has sworn to fight all acts which "aim to undermine our religious and moral values", adding that the authorities and the police will be on watch to repress any "demonstration of an immoral nature".

Kifkif however plans to go ahead with the conference... even if it has to take place behind closed doors.

UPDATE (27 March 09 - 4pm Paris time): The Kifkif website has been hacked. The homepage has been replaced by verses from the Koran, accompanied with a photo of a mass hanging. The message in Arabic: "Do this kind of thing and expect to be castigated by god".

"The law has no right to interfere in what people get up to in bed"

Samir Barkachi is a member of the Kifkif association.

Our association is prohibited by Moroccan law on the grounds of sexual tendencies. So in Morocco we're specifically working on subjects linked to sexuality - our aim is to increase public awareness of the subject. Law 489 prevents us from doing more; it condemns homosexuality. It's a dangerous law that was put in place by France. We're demanding it be revised. The law has no right to interfere with what people get up to in bed.

We currently have 50 active members of Kifkif in Morocco and 500 abroad. In Morocco, even tolerant people don't like the idea of being involved with a gay association. Our Marrakesh meeting on April 15 aims to change this pejorative attitude towards homosexuality. It's a small meeting but we aim to make ourselves heard. We're going to talk about sex - in Morocco there's no sex education.

The choice of city comes down to accessibility - there's an international airport in Marrakesh. For now the location of the meeting has to be kept secret for security reasons. All I can say is that it will be in a private residence.

It's not Islam that's the problem. Islam is a very tolerant religion. I'm a believer and there are many gay Muslims in Morocco. Even some religious figures are gay. Personally, I ask myself how god, who made me gay, could punish me for what he himself gave me. I didn't choose to be gay."

Kifkif behind the anti-gay marriage riots in 2007

When Moroccans rioted over the video of a gay couple who pretended to get married in December 2007, Kifkif protested the movement.

Yes, but...

I'm a Tunisian citizen, and although i'm not homophobic and i respect freedom homosexuals, i really think that they should just be a little discret when they're in society. Why do they need to express their sexual preference in public ? Just be normal and discret, you don't need to take your partner by the hand or kiss him/her in public to feel that you're free.
Homosexual must understand that, especially for an arabic country, it's often shoking for people to see homosexual behaviors. Every one is not that open minded.

Respect others, and they will respect you (i do!).

IMAGINE NO RELIGION Imagine

IMAGINE NO RELIGION

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
And NO RELIGION too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one.

Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

Gays in Islam

One of your commentors states, as we so often hear it said, that "Islam is a tolerant religion" but where is the proof of that tiresome statement? There is no religious freedom in any Muslim country that I am aware of. Muslims are not allowed to convert to other religions of even to renounce Islam on the pain of death or prison. Non-Muslims are not allowed to rise to high office, are discriminated against in employment, cannot build new houses of worship (& Saudi Arabia allows ZERO non-Muslim houses of worship, eventhough there are mosques in Rome, the seat of Catholicism; England, the seat of Anglicanism; Salt Lake City, Utah, the seat of Mormonism etc.) & are not free to marry Muslims. Show me what Muslim country has complete & real religious freedom, or any kind of freedom for that matter.

Islam is not tolerant of people born with a different sexuality. There are 7 countries in the world that kill homosexual men (not women, interestingly) and they are ALL MUSLIM, a religion of vengeance, intolerance & death. Muslims demand freedom to practice their religion & respect for it, yet they do not give freedom or respect to others. How hypocritical.

Your Prophet, if he were alive today, would be treated very harshly under his own religion's sharia law. He led his followers in robbing passing caravans killing the men in at least one occasion & ransoming their women & children - that's thievery which would lose him his hands/feet (not to mention murder & kidnapping, but then the Qu'ran is pretty tolerant of murder of non-Muslims); he led his followers in murdering 600 hundred Jewish men in Medina & sold their women & children into slavery (nice guy), he had way too many wives & at least 2 mistresses (that is adultery in anyone's book, not to mention sexual obsession), he "married" & had sex with a 7 or 8 year old child (child molestation), he had a convenient "revelation" from his god so he could take & marry his own adopted son's wife (as if he needed more sex partners), he perfumed his body, dyed his hair, and painted his eyes (very Taliban, very vain, but how would he be treated in Morocco today or any other Muslim country looking like that?). The Qu'ran has so many contradictions it is hard to know what it really says about most things, and only someone who has never read it in a language they can actually understand could deny this. The Qu'ran was originally written on "scraps" of things & not put into book form until Caliph Abu Bekr, but this "book" had no vowels so speakers interpreted some words differently & different texts appeared in different cities of the Muslim realm.

In Islam all things are pre-destined, even the final fate of every living soul has been decreed by Allah from the beginning so other people's paths in life are none of anyone else's concern. It's none of your business. If God were to have a problem with someone that is God's business, no one else's.

Religion is the problem with the world. There are 10,000 (more or less) religions in the world & almost all claim to be the only true one. The Creator must really find it all so unbelievable. We were created with an inbuilt conscience so the Creator could commune with us directly. God does not need a human "mouthpiece". God can speak to each of us individually & all at once. Why would God need a flawed human to speak for God? Silly. To deny that is to deny the power & ability of God. There are/have been hundreds/thousands of "Prophets" who claim to speak for one god/religion or another and generally contradict each other. This is not how the loving Creator works. All religion is man-made and false.

Don't agree.

You might be very tolerant yourself to say that kind of things!

You also might be very uninformed to say that islam is not a tolerant religion. Just keep your self well informed and by the right persons (not those that want to soil the islam's image, like medias), and you'll see that all that you'd said is wrong.

By the way, you're blaming islamic countries without knowing them all.
I agree that there is some extremist behaviors in some coutries, but all the coutries are not the same. Check Tunisia, Morroco (yes, despite of this article), Emirates, Lebanon...you'll be definetely surprised.

Just be intelligent enough to go over your prejudices.

But unfortunately, people are just seeing what medias show them.

Try to be objective!

Hi. I would like to pinpoint few remarks on your comment. I totally agree that in someway, all religions are manmade, and were put or written for political reasons. Nevertheless, don’t you think that you were a bit subjective about Mohammed and Islam?! Islam is no different that Christianity and Judaism! Both claims to be "The Only One", and believe me; Islam history is no more violent than the history of Christianity and Judaism. Unfortunately, all these three religions believe that they are the only group of people that are blessed by God, and the others must be eliminated in one way or another! The creation of Israel, is nothing but a clear picture of how people mix between "a religion" and nationalism! And sometimes I'm surprised of how people around the world seemed astonished of the idea that Osama Bin Laden is trying to propagate which basically conclude of have a one single big state for Muslims; and at the same time, Israel; which was created on a religious foundation, is normal in the eyes of the "civilized world"! Don’t get me wrong, I'm defending Islam in anyway, but I think Islam is not an exception than any other religion or any political régime throughout history!

NO Christianity and Islam are not the same.....

No, I was not "subjective" about Mohammed and Islam. I was quoting historical fact about both. Mohammed is the example for Muslims to live by and his example is one of violence and intolerance and sexual obsession. He participated in murdering hundreds of men who refused to convert to his new religion. Islam was spread by the sword at the behest of Mohammed and the Qu'ran - "Kill unbelievers wherever you find them"(Sura 2:191). Muslims talk about the Christian Crusaders but they were no different and were actually far worse. They spread their religion across the whole Middle East forcing previously Christian and other peoples to convert, and across the whole of north Africa up into southern France, Spain, Christian Constantinople, and through the Christian Balkans into Hungary, turning churches they didn't burn into mosques etc. All with the sword.

In contrast to this Jesus taught to turn the other cheek and forsake violence, for those without sin to cast the first stone against other sinners, to love your enemy and your neighbor as yourself etc. Christianity spread under great persecution bu word of mouth very rapidly because of its message of love and hope. It wasn't spread by force. The later so-called "Christians" who acted in violence were not following the teachings and example of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. There is a big difference between Jesus and Mohammed. There is no excuse for the violence and intolerance of later "Christians" who bear little resemblance to the One they claim to believe in. Christianity is a very hard way of life to follow, going against Man's innate violent and selfish nature. There never have been many true Christians, but current European civilzation which, along with a few other countries, has become the leader in the world for human and civil rights and tolerance is based on the teachings of Jesus, though more and more Europeans reject religion. The EU proposed a UN charter to ban the discrimination against homosexual people around the world and it was opposed by all Muslim countries and the Rightwing, fundamentalist Old Testament "Christians" of the US Bush administration (who voted more often with the Muslim countries on UN treaties than with the EU). That may change now with Obama, we'll see.

Mohammed based much of his Qu'ran on the Old Testament scriptures of the many Jews who lived around him and he adopted many of their rituals, dietary laws and attitudes. Thus the Qu'ran is similar to the OT in many ways, though the god of the Qu'ran is even more angry and vengeful than the god of the OT. BUT modern day Jewish religion has advanced in its thinking and no longer holds those ancient intolerant and violent tribal beliefs, except for a minority of fundamentalists.

Comparing the small area the Jews want for their homeland to what radical Muslims want for theirs is like comparing rocks to peaches. First of all Israel was the Jewish homeland for centuries (granted they took it first from some one else) and where their holy temple was located until they were driven out a long time ago, but have always yearned to return. The homeland that the radical Muslims want to "reclaim" is a huge stretch of land that they once had taken by force, such as Andaluz Spain, but were eventually driven out of. They have no right to claim this land, and the people who have always lived there do not want them back. They had been Islamic Crusaders forcing their way by the sword into lands that were not Arab even, let alone Muslim. There is no comparison here, they have absolutely zero right of claim to any of these lands.

I now live in Spain where many Moroccans live and everyone has the freedom to worship as they choose, or not. New mosques are being built here and we have a new Buddhist temple nearby. However no Muslim country offers the same tolerance and complete freedom of religion as exists in Western countries with a basis in Christian philosophy. No Muslim country that I know of allows Muslims to convert to another faith or simply to renounce Islam except on pain of death (7 Muslim countries) or prison. Those Muslim countries that allow Christians and Jews to worship do not allow them to build new houses of worship - even Turkey who wants to become a member of the EU! Seven Muslim countries, the only ones who do, have the death penalty for people born with a homosexual orientation. This is so out of touch with modern scientific knowledge and democratic thinking it is unacceptable to enlightened people. It certainly is not the way of a religion of peace and tolerance, that Muslims constantly claim theirs is, without any evidence to back that up.

No, you cannot compare Islam with Christianity or Judaism today. There is no comparison. I do not believe in any religion. I believe religion, whatever brand it is, separates people from their loving and accepting Creator. So much of what passes itself off as religion is just plain blasphemy - claiming to speak for the Creator and portraying the Creator as a vengeful, hate-filled demon rather than the Parent of us all who offers us total and unconditional love and welcome when we return to that Creator.

God does not need any man to speak for God. God created us all with an inner voice, a conscience, through which God communicates with each of us. To deny this and to teach that all the many prophets through time, who often contradict each other and preach a God of vengeance who revels in hurling God's own creation and offspring into eternal torment and suffering, speak as mouthpieces for that loving God, is the utmost evil that has been perpetrated on the human race, ever. This I believe, and the longer I live and the more I see of religion, particularly Islam, the more I am convinced of this.

I welcome you to give substantive proofs against my previous statements. I have asked for that, but as you see, no one has been able to do so because they do not exist. There is a reason that Muslim countries do not allow anyone to question or criticize Mohammed or his religion - they, neither one, can withstand an objective appraisal and survive. Truth, no matter what, is not afraid of question or criticism.

Hadiths Tell A Different Story About Muhammed's Life

There is some evidence - in actual fact it is spelt out in the Hadiths that Muhammed had (sexual) relations with (several) men -

There are a lot of gays in Morocco - and men who go with men because they can't get a women easily before marriage (but they don't consider themselves gay).

In Morocco it is also very common for men to sleep with women as they would do a man - to protect the woman's vaginal virginity until marriage(the women OK this, they can still pass the virginity test - at the doctors)- they call it climbing in through the back window - versus when you are married you can walk in through the front door!

Fr Botros explains it better:-

Father Zakaria Botros on "The perverse sexual habits of the Prophet," Part 1-4Quote from part 2

The first anecdote discussed by the priest revolved around a hadith that, while some ulema say is “weak,” is, nonetheless according to Botros, present in 44 Islamic books—including some highly respected collections, such as Sunan Bayhaqi and Al Halabi.

According to this hadith, a man named Zahir, who used to declare that “the prophet loves me,” said that one day Muhammad crept unawares behind him and put him in a bear-hug. Zahir, alarmed, yelled, “Get off me!” After turning his head and discovering that it was Muhammad, he stopped struggling and proceeded to “push his back into the prophet’s chest — prayers and blessings upon him."

Another curious hadith contained in Sunan Bayhaqi and which traces to Sunan Abu Dawud (one of the six canonical hadith collections), has Muhammad lifting up his shirt for a man who proceeded to kiss his entire torso, “from his bellybutton to his armpits.”

Botros looked casually at the camera and said,“Imagine if the sheikh of Al Azhar [nearest Muslim equivalent to the Pope] went around lifting his shirt for men to kiss his torso” (he proceeded to make smacking kissing noises, for effect).
...
Botros: “Indeed there is. No less than 20 Islamic sources—such as the hadiths of Ahmad bin Hanbal—relay that Muhammad used to suck on the tongues of boys and girls"...

I'd like to personally

I'd like to personally extend my invintation to all the of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered peoples oppressed by a the so-called religion of peace to immigrate to America. In fact, I'm going to be researching ways to advocate their immigration. We may have a bit of a way to go on equality for LGBT in America, but no one is going to face genocide, the law is on your side considering discrimination, and in my experience there is a large bloc of Americans that are gay-friendly. If your country is that dominated by bigotry, get the hell out of there.

My heart goes out to the victims of religion and bigotry.

It's very kind of you to

It's very kind of you to offer sympathy to gay and lesbian people who are so persecuted and even imprisoned and killed in these medieval societies (human rights groups estimate as many as 4000 gay men have been murdered by the Islamic Republic of Iran since its revolution to install a theocracy). BUT, though the US is definitely a step up from these places, Europe is by far better, safer and more welcoming and less judgmental.

My partner and I have been together (we are gay) for over 18 years and left the US for a life of freedom in progressive Spain where we are legally married and have all the same rights as everyone else. Our wonderful Socialist Pres. Zapatero and his Socialist majority in our parliament have given us the freedom and dignity we never had in the US and never thought we would have. They have overcome and rejected the outdated bigotry of religion here to do it too with the large majority of Spaniards in support (quite unlike in the US with such a large fundamentalist population).

The US, last year (under the fundamentalist regime of GW Bush) voted, as usual, with the most repressive countries in the world (including all the Muslim countries) against a UN resolution sponsored by the European Union to end persecution and discrimination against gay and lesbian people around the world. So 1 for the EU (the sponsor) and 0 for the US (the opposer along with Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Morocco etc etc.)

There are many gay/lesbian Moroccans here in Spain who have fled the religious oppression and persecution in Morocco (along with many non-gay Moroccans who have also come to Spain to flee religious backwardness and the lack of freedoms).

There can never be freedom and justice and tolerance in this world until this kind of backward, ignorant religious cancer is eliminated forever. Mohammed's "Book" was much influenced by the Jews who lived around him (he copied many of their rituals, dietary laws, and scriptural ideas) but the majority of Jews (much to their credit) have progressed to a much more modern way of interpreting the Old Testament, thank God, and have embraced a much more advanced and modern way of thinking and that is why they are so much more advanced and successful than any of their Muslim neighbors. The Jews have rejected the ugly medieval ideas of their "Book", so should the Muslims and those who pass themselves off as "Christians".

The European Union is the light to the world for Human Rights and Dignity. Let's hope this is the century of the European Union - not the US! We are proud to call ourselves Europeans now, and proud of what the EU stands for! Viva Europe!

Allah is great

Since your comments were void of any intellectual substance, it is futile to consider taking it further.
It does certainly make muslims happy to see an infidel's heart burn from hatred.
Keep up the good work son of sodomy, for the wrath of Allah is near.
