French news channel iTélé makes mighty booboo

One of our Observers in Madagascar, editor of the Malagasy info site Sobika.com, has alerted us to a blunder made by the French news channel iTélé. In the middle of a report on the protests in the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe come several minutes of footage showing ... the protests in Madagascar.

Supposed footage of Guadeloupe. In the red circle you can see a tobacconist called "Tana Tabac" - Tana is short for the Malagasy capital Antananarivo.

This story merely made us laugh. We recognise that it was a mistake and resulted in no dire consequences - so there's no need to slate iTélé.

The video was posted by iTélé (here). The video's accompanied with this info: "The situation in Guadeloupe is getting worse. For 27 days now the island has been at a standstill, paralysed by roadblocks and riddled by violence..." (Tuesday 17 Feb.09 - 1pm).

"Here in Madagascar we died laughing when we saw that!"

Comment from Jules, our Observer at Sobika.com, who is certain the images were filmed in Madagascar.

I know Antananarivo well, and in any case I believe that the police in French overseas departments wear blue not green like they do here. The proof comes after the 35th second of the report (on msn), they're on Independence Avenue in Tana and we see clearly a map of the city crossed with an AIDS ribbon which is in Tana. Here in Madagascar we died laughing when we saw that!"

Here in Madagascar we died laughing when we saw that!

Hi Jules !! I am not really surprised about this video, Manipulation to destabilize the reader is so easy to do especially in that conflict as most of the viewer what's Guadeloupe looks like !! and i hope that this website which pretend to spread information will With a huge hope make a comment about this. Well Unfortunately, once again concerning Guadeloupe island observers.france24 which is probably right wing has clearly shown their intention to maintain their political view/position concerning this social conflict.

Comment clarification

Dear John Stewart,

We're not quite sure what point you're trying to make in your comment. The article was about an editing mistake made by the French media, not the social situation in Guadeloupe. If you could clarify your comment then we'd be happy to face criticism.

Thanks,
Team Observers
