And if the fake big bang causes a real big hole?

More than a million and a half YouTubers have watched the biggest physics experiment of all time - CERN's simulation of the scenario that could have caused a "Big Bang". Two American researchers went to the US courts to try to stop the experiment from going ahead, because according to them, there was a one in 45 billion chance that it would actually cause a catastrophe.

One in 45 billion, that's the likelihood of dark matter - hypothetically existing matter considered to be the origin of black holes - being created during the CERN experiment, which would also transform its surroundings into dark matter. By chain reaction it would destroy the entire world, transforming it into an enormous black hole.

The researchers at CERN evaluated the risk. They explained that if a black hole was created, it would not be powerful enough to absorb its environment. Their critics responded that there was always margin for error.
